One of the formats I will be introducing to your child is called the Daily 5. The Daily 5 is a literacy structure that promotes your child to develop a love for reading and writing. This format encourages independence and guides students to develop the skills to become a lifelong reader. There are five different aspects of the format (called rounds) that will be introduce to your child individually. The expectations for each round will be explicitly taught with clear guidelines modeled and stated. The students will be taught what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like. The end goal is that your child will be able to build stamina over time until they are successful at each round of the Daily 5.
These are the five rounds we will work towards and develop over the next month:
* Read to Self
* Work on Writing
* Read to someone
* Listen to Reading
* Word Work
Once students have achieved an independence with the Daily 5 rounds and are engage in reading and writing, I will be working with students on their own specific targets. I will conference with students one-on-one and in small groups. Research shows us that students need to practice these skills every day to become successful readers and writers.
