Monthly JDB students participate in outdoor education experiences with Educators from Squam Lakes. Take a look at all of the adventures the 4th grade has had so far this year!
This month 4th grade students learned about structural and behavioral adaptation in mammals. We learned that an adaptation is a trait that an animals has that helps it survive. A structural adaptation could be the color or an animal, the shape of its claws, their teeth or even the placement of their eyes! Behavioral adaptations are behaviors such as feeding habits that an animal has.

In the month of December the 4th grade learned about structural adaptations in plants. We learned about the structure of trees, why some trees keep their leaves and others loose them in the winter and even the advantage of having white bark!

This month we learned about how weathering and erosion shape the landscape. This lesson was a perfect reinforcement of what we've been learning during science in the classroom! (check out Water Erosion Experiment and Permeable Concrete ) The 4th graders worked in small groups to add vegetation to "mountains" in order to determine how vegetation or lack there of changed the amount of weathering a slope experienced. We were able to see how having vegetation changed the amount of the slope that was washed away when water was poured on it. More pictures here: November pictures
