Homeroom is the place you will go every morning at the start of school. In homeroom we will listen to announcements, complete morning work, take attendance and lunch count and have our morning meeting.
This year we plan to continue the tradition of having a whole group meeting once a week. Last year our schedule allowed us to combine our homeroom with Mrs. Kwap's once a week for morning meeting. This year we will plan to have a closing meeting and reflection time, this allows us to create a more cohesive learning team with all of the upstairs students.
Upstairs Daily In-Person Schedule
Remote days will follow a modified version of this schedule. The remote schedule will be shared prior to any remote days.
5th grade Social Studies students will continue to learn about New Hampshire History this year, while also looking at how events in New Hampshire helped to shape our country. They will be building on previous knowledge from 4th grade and gain a better understanding of how both our state and country came to be the way it is today. The 5th grade students will focus on topics such as:
1.) Building a Colony
2.) Building a State
3.) Changes on the Farm
4.) Big Factories and New Industries
4th grade Social Studies students will explore New Hampshire history and examine how our state has been shaped by diverse groups of people. Beginning with a unit on the Abenaki, students will be provided with the opportunity to explore history through reading, listening to oral storytelling, exploring artifacts and learning to cook traditional dishes (with the help of Chef Steve). Following that unit they will continue through the time periods of settling New Hampshire (1623-1763) , New Hampshire and The American Revolution and finally, Immigration and the Industrial Age.

In 4th grade science we will focus on:
Energy
Waves
Structure, Function and Information Processing
Earths Systems: Process That Shape the Earth
During our E.L.A time, we will use a combination of whole group and small group learning. We will read both as a class and independently. Throughout the year we will work on, narrative, informational and persuasive writing. We will also continue to create and use interactive grammar notebooks.
A personal goal of mine this year is to show students that reading should be enjoyable. As a team we have recently been talking about improving reading instruction and I believe that by fostering a love of reading we can both improve students abilities and create lifelong learners.
During Flexible Group time all upstairs students will work in small groups on activities that focus on areas of need. This is a time to get extra help, be challenged or explore something new! Flexible groups will work with both Mrs. Schaefer and Mrs. Kwap and will likely change weekly.
Flex Group Goals for this year:
1.) Finish Jennie's Story!
2.) Include game time to promote Social Emotional Learning.
3.) Create targeted intervention or practice activities in a small group setting.
4. ) Provide time for independent reading.
In 4th grade math we will focus on multi-digit multiplication and start long division.
In 5th grade math we will learn about decimals. We will also continue with multiplication and division.

Hello Everyone! I'm excited to be back at JDB for my 4th year. Out of all the schools I've taught at JDB is "my place", it just feels like home. I plan to be teaching here for many years to come. I've been working in the education field for the past 12 years. I started my career teaching preschool. When I decided to pursue my M.Ed, I spent 3 years working as a paraeducator and taking classes. Then I finally moved on to teaching elementary school. So far I've taught everything from 2nd-5th and have experience in classrooms up through 8th grade. I love being in school, both teaching and taking classes myself.
Outside of school I stay very busy with my children and our animals. I love being outside! I spend a lot of time riding my bike and my horse, kayaking, skiing and exploring our state. I also coach lacrosse and volunteer with M.V.'s high school equestrian team. I can't wait to get to know you better.
