The Catholic Church teaches that participation in Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation is an essential responsibility of Catholic life.

This obligation comes from the Church, not from our parish's Faith Formation program.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains:

"The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life."

Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2177

When must Catholics attend Mass?

Catholics who are bound by the Church's law are obliged to participate in Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. The obligation can be fulfilled by attending a Catholic Mass on Sunday or on the preceding evening, such as a Saturday evening Vigil Mass.

Children are introduced to this practice from an early age, with parents and families helping them grow into full participation in the Church's worship. Under Church law, the obligation generally begins at age seven for those who have the use of reason.

Why does the Church call us to attend Mass every Sunday?

The Church's teaching reflects the importance of the Eucharist in Christian life. Sunday Mass unites us with Christ and one another, strengthens our faith, and reminds us that we belong to something greater than ourselves.

The Catechism teaches that participation in Sunday Mass expresses our belonging to Christ and His Church. By worshipping together, we strengthen and encourage one another in faith (CCC 2182).

What if someone cannot attend Mass?

The Church recognizes that serious circumstances, such as illness, the care of infants, or other grave reasons, may excuse someone from the Sunday obligation. A pastor may also grant a dispensation in appropriate circumstances.

When serious circumstances make attending Mass impossible, families are encouraged to dedicate time to prayer, reflect on the Sunday readings, and remain spiritually connected to the Church.

Faith Formation is not only for children. It is a journey of faith for the whole family.

The Catholic Church teaches that parents are the first and most important educators of their children in the faith. This responsibility begins at Baptism, when parents commit themselves to raising their children in the Catholic faith.

But being the first teachers of faith does not mean parents are expected to have all the answers. We are all learning, growing, and deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ throughout our lives.

Our Faith Formation program seeks to support families in this lifelong journey.

When parents and children attend Mass together, pray together, and talk about their faith, they help one another grow. Children learn by watching the adults in their lives. At the same time, children's questions, curiosity, and experiences can inspire parents to rediscover and deepen their own faith.

This is the foundation of our approach to family catechesis.

The parish and the family are partners in forming disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our classes provide opportunities for religious instruction, but faith formation continues at home, at Mass, and in the ordinary experiences of family life.

We encourage families to make Sunday Mass a shared experience. Talk with your children about the readings or homily. Help them learn the prayers and responses. Invite them to offer their own intentions during Mass. Encourage them to recognize ways they can live what they have heard throughout the coming week.

These practices help children understand that being Catholic is a way of life, something we learn and live together.

Why do we record Mass attendance?

As part of our Faith Formation program, Saint Augustine-Saint Francis Xavier asks families to document their children's participation in Sunday Mass.

This is a parish formation practice, separate from the Church's obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

Our goal is not simply to collect envelopes or check off attendance. Our goal is to help children and families develop a lasting habit of Sunday worship and grow in their relationship with Christ.

Recording attendance helps us:

• Encourage consistency. Regular participation in Sunday Mass helps families establish worship as a meaningful part of their weekly lives.

• Foster active participation. Our children's envelopes invite children to reflect on what they can offer God through their prayers, service, time, and talents.

• Support families. Attendance records help us recognize when a family may benefit from encouragement, additional resources, or a pastoral conversation.

We recognize that every family is at a different place in its journey of faith. Some families already have an established practice of attending Sunday Mass, while others are still developing that habit.

Our intention is to encourage and accompany families, not to make judgments about their faith.

Missing attendance documentation does not necessarily mean a child has missed Mass. When concerns arise, our first step is to reach out, understand the circumstances, and work together.

How to Record Mass Attendance

At Saint Augustine or Saint Francis Xavier

1. Attend Mass together as a family. We encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to prepare yourselves through quiet prayer.

2. Before Mass begins, take a children's offertory envelope from the vestibule of the church.

3. Have your child write their full name and grade on the envelope.

4. Encourage your child to complete the envelope thoughtfully, reflecting on what they would like to offer God.

5. Place the envelope in the collection basket during Mass.

There is no monetary contribution required.

Children can offer God their time, talent, and treasure in many ways. They might write a prayer intention, describe an act of kindness, draw a picture, or share something they are grateful for.

These small practices help children understand that they have something meaningful to contribute to the life of the Church.

Attending Mass at Another Catholic Parish

Families are welcome to attend Mass at another Catholic church, whether traveling, visiting relatives, or attending a Mass that better accommodates their schedule.

When attending Mass at another parish:

1. Collect a copy of that church's bulletin.

2. Take a photograph or make a digital copy.

3. Email it to formation@sasfx.org, along with your child's full name, so we can record the attendance.

Families Who Regularly Worship at Another Parish

If your family is registered and regularly worships at another Catholic parish, please provide a letter from that parish confirming your active registration and regular participation in Mass.

This letter is required as part of Faith Formation registration and allows families to avoid submitting weekly bulletins.

Mass Participation and Sacramental Preparation

Regular participation in Sunday Mass is an essential part of preparing for First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Sacramental preparation involves more than completing lessons or meeting classroom requirements. It includes developing a life of prayer, participating in the worship of the Church, and growing in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

When considering a child's readiness for the sacraments, we look at their overall formation, including participation in the life of the Church.

Attendance records are one way we support this process, but they are not the sole measure of a child's faith or sacramental readiness.

When concerns arise, we will work with families to understand their circumstances and determine how best to support their child's continued formation.

We understand that families have many responsibilities and that personal circumstances can sometimes make regular participation difficult.

Our desire is to accompany you, encourage you, and provide the resources and guidance you need to grow in faith as a family.

We take the Church's teaching about Sunday worship seriously, and we also take seriously our responsibility to care for and support the families entrusted to us.

You do not need to have all the answers to help your children grow in faith. The parish is here to walk with you, provide resources, and explore these questions together.
