Physical Education with a Purpose
Hello! My name is Kim Selby and I have been teaching Elementary Physical Education since 2003 -- all of them here at Wilson School! My goal is to use intentional and purposeful play to help my students find the joy in movement in an active and healthy environment in which they feel seen, heard, and understood. I want to instill in my students a desire to move and play, as well as a belief in themselves that they are capable of anything! I hope to empower them to lead healthy and active lives by introducing them to a variety of activities that promote movement and develop teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperation.
My elementary Physical Education program is centered around our newly developed SASD curriculum which uses the SHAPE America National Physical Education standards as its cornerstone and emphasizes physical literacy. Excellent education considers all aspects of learning for children and educating the whole child. I believe physical education is such an important experience for children because all domains of learning - physical, cognitive, emotional, social - are touched upon daily. A strong physical education program is linked to improvements in academic skills, classroom behavior, healthy emotional attitudes, and better adjustment to school life. In addition, studies have also shown the importance of physical activity in boosting language development, problem solving, risk management, and independent learning skills.
In short, you’re not fully educated until you’re physically educated!
Taking Our Fun Seriously
Let's be honest....P.E. class is supposed to be FUN! And when that fun is taken seriously, a classroom culture is created where students feel truly connected to their teacher and each other. Sure, we play games and get the wiggles out, but it's SO much more than that. Physical activity is the "What", but Physical Education is the "Why" and "How".
