At St. Augustine School, we focus on developing Christian values and strive to build within each student a sense of commitment, loyalty, integrity, and self discipline. We believe that the best way to provide a positive athletic experience for our students is to promote and create an environment with opportunities for players of all skill levels, teaching great fundamentals, developing a competitive attitude focussing on teamwork to build success. We seek to provide a positive experience in all extra curricular sports that will help keep students involved and active.
With both individual and team sports, student athletes commit to the 4As (Attitude, Ability, Attendance and Appreciation). We expect our athletes to be on time for practices, be prepared, respect their coaches, peers, and officials, participate to the best of their ability, encourage and affirm their peers and act in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
TEAM SPORTS
St. Augustine School is part of the Catholic Independent Schools of the Archdiocese of Vancouver (CISVA). The CISVA has a long tradition of well-developed and structured leagues in a wide variety of sports. All leagues are overseen by the CISVA Elementary Athletic Commission (EAC). St. Augustine School participates in the CISVA sports within the rules outlined by the EAC.
Practical Applications
The EAC determines the rules under which schools participate. Rules for playing time, team size, and specific sport rules are not local decisions. Following our own guiding principles, the coaches at St. Augustine School will work within the rules provided by the EAC to create the best opportunities for our athletes.
Conduct of Parents, Coaches and Athletes
Coaches, parents and athletes are expected to conduct themselves with dignity and respect consistent with our guiding principles and general Christian principles at all times. During practices and competitions this means playing and cheering with enthusiasm while respecting the important and difficult roles being fulfilled by officials, coaches and athletes. We encourage our school community, teachers, staff, and parents to be supportive and encouraging to all our players as well as the coaches and officials. Our coaches are volunteering their time and energy to provide a great learning experience for our student athletes and should be treated with respect.
When decisions need to be made about which athletes can participate in events, or how athletes will participate, coaches must exercise discretion. In addition to evaluating an athlete's ability to demonstrate the 4A's (Attitude, Ability, Attendance and Appreciation), coaches also take into account the broader effects of their choices on the team, individual development, and overall goals and objectives. We ask that parents and athletes trust and respect that the decisions made by coaches are done with good will and the best intentions. Sometimes decisions are made that parents and athletes may disagree with. We welcome honest and respectful discussion and questions. Concerns and complaints should be addressed in the manner set out in the Parent & Family Handbook.
Running a large and successful program is a daunting task. It requires many hours of dedication and sacrifice by administrators, coaches, parents, and athletes. We are grateful for the support of our community and look forward to a successful year of athletics at St. Augustine School.
