Happy November! Here are some snapshots of our artistic adventures last week. You won't see fifth or sixth grade art classes...we were on a wonderful field trip on Monday instead!

Kindergarten artists are still hard at work preparing for their butterfly migration, so they spent Friday morning making some delicious flowers for hungry butterflies to take a sip or two of nectar from on their journey.

First-graders painted the details on their soon-to-be drums for the Spanish song they will be performing in December. Lots of beautiful colors, patterns, and shapes!

Second grade enjoyed some time sculpting beeswax figures, then setting up scenes for their creations, using cloth, gems, stones, and other materials. They loved creating stories for their people, animals, and other sculptures. It was a fun afternoon spending time with friends and using their imaginations to make their ideas come to life!

K-2 STEAMS inventors continued to explore using alternative methods to attach materials together, while practicing skills like tying knots, simple sewing, fastening, and beading. This was a great group!

Third-graders used what they had learned about Claude Monet's waterlily paintings to create these beautiful collaborative artworks, featuring watercolor backgrounds and 3-dimensional paper lily pads and flowers. I love the uniqueness of each lily!

Fourth-graders added some finishing touches to their puppets, which will make their performance debut this Thursday! They got a chance to try them out in a rehearsal right after their art class last week, and they got the seal of approval!

Seventh-graders have started a new sculpture project using wire and metal. Right now they are exploring techniques for cutting, attaching, twisting, and bending wire and metal shapes together using pliers. They are very excited about this project! Meanwhile, we have some beautiful finished Four Elements projects!

6-8 STEAMS met this week with a new group of artists. We listened to short samples of sounds (2-3 minutes each) and created mini-artworks based on the sounds. Some of our inspirations included water sounds, birdsong, a busy city, a trolley car, some violin and piano music, and African drumming. We also listened to some longer samples and brainstormed words, feelings and reactions. These experiences will help students to create a final artwork that includes a poem, word, or other text. I always love this workshop...it's a perfect and mindful way to end a busy week!

At the beginning of the week, the fifth, sixth, and seventh-graders traveled to Harvard to visit the Peabody Museum, where we viewed many wonderful cultural artifacts and natural history specimens from all over the world. Abbey and I were with the seventh-graders, who enjoyed an activity related to animal specimens, and spent some time sketching in the different galleries.

Here are some more photos from the Middle School Dance last week. What a fun and goofy group!

The students in the Hogwarts Handicrafts enrichment group spent the afternoon in the Potion Lab with Professor Abbey the Potions Master. They learned some color-changing spells and even experimented with fire, under the safe guidance of their potions master, of course.

Have an amazing week, and stay warm and healthy!
