The Personal Project is an integral part of the MYP certificate.
Introduced in Year 9 and competed in Year 10, the Personal Project has students explore an area of personal interest over an extended period of time. Through this independent investigation, students consolidate their learning from the MYP and develop important skills. Students write an extensive report of the process of their inquiry and the creation of their personal project that is assessed internally and then externally moderated by the IB to ensure a globally-consistent standard of excellence.
Essentially, the Personal Project gives students free rein over an aspect of their learning to create something unique that draws on their MYP and prior learning. As students need to explicitly place their project within a global context, projects often serve to support the Santa Maria and local community, while other personal projects can have a wider vision to target action that can serve more broadly.
The aims of the MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:
participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a Global Context
generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
communicate effectively in a variety of situations
demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments
