When families are empowered to lead, schools grow stronger, more inclusive, and more responsive to the needs and experiences of their communities. ELAC officer roles create meaningful opportunities for families of multilingual students to share their voice, represent their peers, and partner with school staff to support student success. By building shared leadership, ELACs strengthen the bridge between home and school—and honor the wisdom multilingual families bring to every decision.
While districts may determine policies around ELAC officer positions, one statewide requirement is that each ELAC must elect at least one representative to the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC)—a leadership role that allows families to amplify their voices at the district level, advocate for meaningful change, and ensure that the hopes and concerns of their school community help shape decisions that impact multilingual learners.
To support flexible planning, the ELAC & DELAC elections may be held as part of another ELAC meeting using a blended template.
