Several months into the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and universities have adopted an online and modular distance learning delivery of instruction. Students are now likely adept at going online to attend classes and take their exams via Google Meet, Zoom, or, in the case of Colegio de San Lorenzo, the FNB Learning Management System (LMS).

If we were to look back, it seems that six years just went by so fast. In 2016, we were ushered into a new era of change as Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency settled in Malacañang. But if we take a closer look, the campaign periods that were held during that time were not as intense as today. The campaign rallies that were held during this time were not as jampacked as before. And even the candidates themselves say that this election is really like no other. They state that before, they found it hard to campaign because not many people were volunteering to help them. The 2022 elections saw many people truly offering their time, talent, and treasure to the campaign sorties. And this is a good indication that many people now realize that exercising the right to vote surely has an impact on their future.

In January of this year, “All of Us Are Dead”, a Korean drama (K-Drama), became the #1 streamed on Netflix. One theme that is prevalent in the whole of the series is all about survival. Each of the episodes features how these high school students think of clever ways to prolong their lives and not get bitten by any zombies while thinking of ways to survive and make it every day. They think of ways wherein they would be able to outsmart the zombies and how to survive daily. An analogy can be made with this survival instinct of the students. The survival instinct can also be likened to any college student or Ruizian’s way of how to survive in today’s online class setup.

With just four weeks left before election day, we get increasingly surrounded by a line of campaign posters on sidewalks, flyers, and billboards that boast achievements and promises by each candidate. Political aspirants themselves also get hectic with their campaign schedules - traveling day-to-day to different cities and provinces to conduct rallies that can woo and seal the votes of our fellow countrymen. In turn, we Filipinos carry the responsibility to weigh and scrutinize each of the candidates’ platforms.

Tagaytay is known to be one of the best summer getaways for families and friends who want to experience an alternative Baguio, with its high altitude and cool mountain breeze. We are all familiar with the wonders of Taal Lake and Volcano, with their breathtaking views and gentle breezes. However, a dark cloud looms over this picturesque leisure destination, as the Taal volcano has been experiencing sporadic eruptions.
Just last week, Taal Volcano recorded an earthquake and three pyro-magnetic eruptions, raising the alert to level 3. Authorities advise both local and tourist citizens to take precautionary measures due to the threat to their safety from the activities that are currently happening in town.

With the next Philippine general elections right around the corner, the voice of the youth is becoming more widely recognized as critical to defining the current voting trend. This is seen evident within the Ruizian community, as the would-be involvement of youth in the impending elections was earlier measured in the Pulso ng mga Ruiziano survey that received 750 responses from January to February.
According to data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec), 56% of voters, or 37 million out of 65.7 million voters are from the 18-41 age group, a figure that is significantly higher than Comelec’s initial projection of 52% last year. Spokesperson James Jimenez stressed that the youth vote will really be a driving force in the May 2022 elections.

Article 5 Section 1 of the 1987 Philippine constitution states that "Suffrage may be exercised by all citizens of the Philippines not otherwise disqualified by law, who are at least eighteen years of age and who shall have resided in the Philippines for at least one year, and in the place wherein they propose to vote for at least six months immediately preceding the election. No literacy, property, or another substantive requirement shall be imposed on the exercise of suffrage"
As Ruizians, our right to elect and choose our leaders is the basis for social participation. Together with our leaders, we can participate in our nation's building. So, as this is our right, we should also be mindful of the people whom we trust to run our government.

On this day, February 25, 2022: We commemorate the 36th anniversary of the 1986 People’s Power Revolution. We remember what transpired in that event in our Philippine history through news articles, and books. We learned that it was a peaceful revolution, a four-day campaign gathering millions of Filipinos, marching along the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue that ultimately ended, with the removal of then-president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in the seat of the presidency. We remembered it as a peaceful opposition of authority.
