Each of the slideshows below are grouped by subject. As we focus on a new unit in each content area, we'll add notes about what we are currently working on. You'll notice the same color coding for subjects across all areas- curriculum notes, classroom references, etc.
Students have a 5th Grade Folder which has their homework planner and assignment tracker inside. This is where they'll document all work that needs to be completed, check it off when completed, and record grades when they are released. Both classes fill these out on Fridays and students are expected to share their graded work and trackers with their families.
Parents, hopefully this is a starting point for you when talking with your child about what we are doing in school.
We use the district adopted enVision Math program. Students will work out of textbooks that will stay in the classroom and will have workbooks that will travel between home and school for practice and homework.
Students also have a math notebook where we keep main concepts for reference during lessons and assessments.
Reading instruction will be incorporated with other content areas, class read aloud discussions, and direct reading instruction.
A lot of our work will be done in our ELA notebooks which are interactive resources where we will take notes and then be able to reference them throughout the year with all of our ELA tasks.
Our informational units tend to revolve around Scholastic News and content areas. Literature is usually done with short texts, small group book clubs, and whole class notel studies.
Students will have a combination of both large and small writing tasks throughout the year. Each season they'll do a reflection on a school break, we'll do small quick writes called emoji paragraphs (historically a class favorite activity), We Will Write for reinforcing revision and editing, longer writing process pieces, and response writing in other content areas.
The main types of writing in fifth-grade are narrative, opinion, and informational writing.
Grammar is titled "language" on the report card and will also be referred to as conventions (as opposed to content when writing) with writing grades.
We will focus on the building blocks of English writing conventions such as parts of speech, sentence structure, verb tenses, and multiple meaning words. Our work with figurative language will typically be shared in this subject area.
One of the biggest areas we try to incorporate throughout the year is morphology- study of word roots and affixes.
Our main curriculum for science is Mystery Science. Each unit typically has one lesson a week with questions at the end of the week to show learning. The whiteboard will link to the current lesson's video for absent students.
For life sciences we will use a program by Splash Sacramento which focuses on Vernal Pools and concludes with a field trip.
Throughout the year we will have various STEM challenges.
Most of our lessons will be teacher created units of studies using lapbooks, simulations, and working with primary and secondary sources. We will have Ancient Artifacts on campus twice to focus on primary source material.
Students will learn about geography, the history of peoples and life from first nations through the creation of our current government. They will also research states and share their information with the class.
We will do monthly draw and write pages called Directed Draws. At the end of the year they will be assembled into books.
There will be a few different art projects throughout the year that will be done as gifts or added to their fifth-grade memory book.
Any extra activities that we do around class community or are outside of general subjects will be shared here.
