Hello students! Please use this button before 6pm PDT Friday August 11 to request a deadline extension. Include as much detail as possible, along with supporting documentation.
Please note:
(1) This form is the only way to request an extension. Other methods will not be considered.
(2) Completing this form does not necessarily mean that your request will be granted.
The Registrar will review your application and documentation. If the application and documentation are approved, an agreement will be sent to you and your instructor(s) for signature.
First, the Registrar will determine whether a student is eligible, then, if the student is eligible, the instructor(s) will approve or deny the request. Instructors cannot override the Registrar's determination. Even if a student has discussed an extension with an instructor, the student may be deemed ineligible by the Registrar. The Registrar's determination is final.
Thank you!
What Is the Extension Policy?
Students are expected to meet all deadlines for assignments and tests as listed in the course syllabus. In certain circumstances students may be allowed extra time to complete their classwork. These circumstances will include personal medical issues, family emergencies, or other serious problems that directly impact the student’s ability to complete the work. Students will be required to provide documentation that substantiates each circumstance. At the end of the semester, students can be given up to a 2-week extension after the end of the semester to complete their coursework, if they have provided documentation for special circumstances, as outlined above.
What Is It Not?
1) It is not unlimited extra time. For students who experience regular difficulty with meeting assignment deadlines in a class (vs. episodically or occasionally), it may be appropriate to request a Course Withdrawal or a Leave of Absence to the Registrar. Students who have missed (or anticipate missing) too many assignment deadlines may find that a make-up plan is not workable.
2) It is not retroactive. Some students may wait to give class instructors notice of their eligible accommodations. Students have a responsibility to anticipate their need for and request an extension in good time.
3) It is not a solution for personal organization and time management difficulties. Students must factor in the reality of their own personal situation and use time effectively to complete assignments. Taking a heavy course load, having a job outside of school or other family commitments do not justify allowing an accommodation even if they have a diagnosed disability that may otherwise support this accommodation. For example, a student with a disability might request a modified attendance policy for an early morning class, claiming he or she does not function well in the morning or is not organized and may forget to come to class. While this may be related to the student’s diagnosed condition, the School is within its rights to expect students with disabilities to be able to fulfill basic and essential requirements, with or without accommodations.
Student Responsibilities
1) Request the accommodation from the instructor in a timely manner and send supporting documentation to the Registrar. This documentation will show that the circumstance prevents the student from completing coursework on time (e.g, doctor’s note, court summons, etc.).
2) Follow up (by email) with each instructor to request an extended deadline for specific assignments for which more time is needed.
3) Have a clear understanding of whether adjustments to assignment due dates will be possible for the particular class. Unless discussed with the instructor and agreed upon beforehand, an extension is not automatically granted for work that is due.
4) Keep a copy of the email that outlines the specific agreement with your class instructor. Make sure to keep a written record of any agreed upon changes to the plan.
5) Adhere to the agreed-upon plan and complete the work within the alternate timeline. The professor’s class policy on late work (e.g., 10 points off a grade for each day late) will remain if you fail to meet an agreed upon disability-related extension or miss deadlines for non-disability related reasons.
When you fill out the form, include as much detail as possible. A decision will be made on the basis of (1) your reason and (2) your supporting documentation.
