We want to create this program to bring awareness to the school system, everyday curriculum, and local community about the importance of diversity acceptance, communication, and celebration. We are hoping this program will include a student club. We as the next generation want to help educate our peers and upcoming students of Sandwich High School about the importance of accepting one another, and not being afraid to talk about issues concerning diversity in a safe and respectful way.
The thought process that prompted this idea was mainly focused around the insensitivity we have seen in the school system concerning race. We want to make sure the students in Sandwich become knowledgeable on topics of diversity and are able to comfortably talk about them with one another, because of what we know they will encounter when they leave this small town. And not only should they feel comfortable talking about it, they should celebrate it, because diversity is a wonderful thing.
At the beginning of the summer, we coordinated with Mrs. Laura Tanguilig who got us involved with a diversity video she and Mrs. Wikland were creating with Sandwich High School alumni and videographer Taiki Magyar. It was great to hear each other's viewpoints, and realizing that we have the same visions and hopes for programs like these. Meghan and I contacted almost fifty students at SHS and we invited half to speak in the video, for which we had three very successful filming days. When we reached out to our peers, we received an overwhelming amount of excitement, interest, and support in the necessity to discuss topics like these. This video is to be shown at a faculty meeting in late August.
In the winter of 2019, the Diversity Club hosted the first official “Diversity Dinner” at Sandwich High School. Upwards of one dozen students, teachers, and parents attended the dinner, each bringing a dish or dishes from a different culture. Some attendees brought family dishes or dishes from their respective cultures. The event was photographed by Kyle Furlani and hosted by Chris Dumas. This is considered to be one of Diversity Club’s most successful events.
The 2020-21 Sandwich High School Diversity Club has elected to create a resource guide website containing information and media relevant to the promotion and advocacy of diversity and inclusion, such as: books, movies/documentaries, news articles, YouTube videos, etc.* The Diversity Club hopes to provide a singular space where accessible and engaging information to community members looking to gain a greater understanding of the experiences and issues beyond that of the Sandwich community. The guide aims to encourage learning and education pertaining to diversity and the importance of global voices and perspectives in art, science, and entertainment. Targeted toward the Sandwich Schools community and the greater Sandwich town community, resources available to all different age groups and levels of understanding will be included. The Diversity Club hopes to collaborate with teachers, students, and other Sandwich community members to collect resources relevant to the guide’s mission. Through a submission form located on the guide’s website, community members and students will have the opportunity to suggest resources to add to the guide that will be continually updated with relevant information.
