Hi everyone,
We are back to distance learning for a wee while.
I will add new tasks to this learning board. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to find the most recent additions to this learning page. You can send me pictures of anything you are doing, if you want to.
Here are some tasks for you to complete while you are at home. Make sure you continue to look after yourselves and your family.
We will have zoom meetings to catch up and to talk through learning. I will send your parents an invite via seesaw.
Welcome to the Room 8 Learning Page
Here you can find tasks to do that are just for our class.
Remember that taking care of ourselves and our family is our top priority at the moment. Keep your learning space and your play spaces tidy (this will help keep your home comfortable for everyone there).
Your challenge: Do something nice for someone in the household every day. This could be as simple as vacuuming the lounge or making someone a sandwich.
We will update you with any new information as it comes to hand. We've got this Sandspit Road School!!!
Whaea Sarah
Spelling:
Copy these words down correctly
Try spelling them out in a rhythm: say e.x.c (pause) i.t.ed (this is not breaking into syllables but rather creating a spelling rhythm to help break words down into a pattern students can remember)
Practise writing them down again by using them in a sentence
Memorise them
Now ask Someone to test you on them!
Here are your words:
Excited
Amazing
Wonderful
Awesome
Excellent
Fantastic
Fabulous
Writing:
Use your imagination to get into the mind of a bear. Pretend you are a bear that just woke up from hibernating. Write a letter to a friend using descriptive words.
Use these questions to help you:
Where were you sleeping?
What did you dream about?
How do you feel after your long sleep?
What are you going to do now?
Number Code:
Text a word activity
Pick 5 words from your spelling list
Write the first spelling word in the spelling word column
Record the number code for that word
Repeat step 2 and 3 with each spelling word
(The example is at the bottom of the page - I can't seem to move it up)
Number:
Ask a person who is older than you to help you with this
We are learning how to count how many tens are in a number
You can use materials to help you if you need them (pegs could be worth ten and marbles could be worth one).
Count the tens and say how many ones are left over.
Start by using numbers under 100
How many tens are there in 72? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 45? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 91? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 30? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 68? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 53? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 25? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 100? How many ones are left over?
If that was easy for you - try using higher numbers under 200
How many tens are there in 111? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 133? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 177? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 150? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 149? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 200? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 184? How many ones are left over?
How many tens are there in 162? How many ones are left over?
Extra for experts Number Question:
A farmer had 240 sheep. He wanted to put them into separate paddocks. Each paddock could only have ten sheep in each. How many paddocks did the farmer need?"
Aotearoa - the land of the long white cloud
WALHT: Identify the meaning of three Maori carving shapes and attempt to sketch these
The crossover/twist
Hei Matau/fish hook
Koru
There are three main concepts/values that are represented by the shapes
(Twist) The bonding of friendship and joining of lives for eternity
(Hei Matau) is the provider of food. It represents strength and determination and brings peace, prosperity, good luck and good health. It also provides for a safe journey over water
(koru) is the unfolding of the fern frond and represents a celebration of the vitality of life, new growth and new beginning
Try sketching these beautiful shapes!
Now pick someone in your family to describe what each shape represents...
Wait an hour...
Now try explain the shapes and their meanings again to test if you have remembered what they mean!
This is the Pat on The ack Trophy. This is something that I will give out to a child I see doing wonderful work or showing fantastic effort. When we return to the school grounds I will give it out each day and you get t otake it home to show your family (then return it to shool the following day so it can be given out again ).
WELL DONE TO THOSE CHILDREN WHO HAVE ALREADY WON THIS TROPHY!!!!
Write me a song!!! Make up words for these singing men that live in my house. Your song can be as serious or as funny as you'd like. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
This is the example of the spelling code activity
Read this story to someone. When you see text in bold increase your expression and your volume!
Create a ‘flap book’
We are learning how to: Use descriptive language
Steps:
Rule a box 15cm by 15cm (that’s 15cm for each side of the box)
Inside the box draw an animal - make sure you choose an animal that you will be able to describe (don’t forget to colour it in)
On a new piece of paper rule a box 16cm by 16cm (slightly bigger is fine)
Cut the larger square out and place it over the animal picture you have drawn and glue or tape the TOP ONLY - so it is a flap covering your picture (you can lift the flap to see what is underneath)
Now write a description of the animal you have drawn. Think about how you can best describe your animal’s features (without naming the animal)
Show your work to a family member and see if they can guess your animal by reading your description. Once they guess, they can lift the flap and see if they were right!!!
Find a rock to paint - smooth river ones are best but just make do with what you can find.
You could paint a small scene like ‘the beach’ or you could paint a message.
Here, I have painted flowers all over my rock and then used a stencil to paint my words.
My daughter painted ‘freestyle’.

Research (using your computer or any books you may have already at home,) and find 5 interesting facts about an octopus.
Number and record each fact.
Draw a diagram of an octopus - label the parts of the octopus.
Order of Events:
Think of a routine you have (it could be what you do in the morning when you wake up, or it could be something else you think of.)
In each sentence, tell me the next part of the routine - putting your routine in order.
Each new sentence should start with a different word.
None of our sentences will start with And (each part of our routine deserves to begin a new sentence.)
You can follow this pattern:
Title: The order of starting my day
First I.......
Secondly I..........
Next I.............
After that I................
Finally I................
Design a doggy daycare fun park! You could draw it - label it and colour it.
I have used my daughter's toys to give you an idea.
I have a slide, a bubble bath (I used cotton wool) I have a bridge and snuggly beds for the dogs to sleep in. I have a trough as their feeding bowl.
Use your imagination to come up with some really cool, interesting ideas for your daycare.
Read this poem through to yourself.
As you read it - visualize each line (try to cement it into your brain)
Read the poem out loud a few times.
Try and recall the poem without the words in front of you!
Poetry #2
Read the following poem multiple times. Get into a rhythm when you say it (stop at the end of each line for a breath), Try to commit it to your memory. Share it with someone in your house - saying the poem 'off by heart'
Seaweed, seaweed in the sand
You are slippery in my hand,
And when I squeeze you
Tell me why?
You squirt water in my eye!
Have a go and see if you can add interesting features to your house!
Bigger Doubles - Adding 10s and 1s
It is important we learn our doubles - they help us when adding larger sums
For these questions, add the tens then add the ones together to get your answer. I'll show you...
12 + 12 = 10 + 10 (= 20) and 2+2 (= 4) 20 + 4 = 24 - so 12 + 12 = 24
Now you try these:
13 +13 =
14 + 14 =
11 + 11 =
23 + 23 =
22 + 22 =
21 + 21 =
32 + 32 =
31 + 31 =
33 + 33 =
34 + 34 =
41 + 41 =
42 + 42 =
44+ 44 =
43 + 43 =
Now you have the idea, try these....
50 + 50 =
150 + 150 = (add the 50s first then add the answer onto the hundreds)
250 + 250 =
350 + 350 =
450 + 450 =
500 + 500 =
Handwriting
Use a sharp pencil and write on lined paper. Our sentence uses every letter of the alphabet.
We are learning how to:
form our letters correctly
Sit our letters on the line
Make our shape and size consistent

We are learning how to: make meaningful connections and demonstrate understanding by comparing and contrasting two things.
The large circles are where you write your differences (in one circle you write about what is different in the country and in the other circle you write about what is different in the city)...In the middle of the two circles is where you write the similarities (the things that are the same in both the country and the city)
Write a funny Joke:
Create a funny joke. You can use another joke you know (or one you find online) as a template for you to model off.
Share your joke with me. If you can make me laugh - you will get 50 house points!!!!
Story Starter for Writing:
Use this story starter to begin an amazing piece of writing!!! Think about using descriptive words to make your story come to life.
Down deep in the murky undersea forest a huge black shadow lurked......
Create a brand new flavour ice block. Think about taste combinations (not everything goes well together.)
Fruits and vegetables usually go really well together! If you have the ingredients at home - try blending them up (ask a parent if it is ok first - then ask them to help you with the blending/peeling/grating etc ) and freezing them. If you don't have an ice block mould - consider what you could use instead.
Taste your creation - was it nice? Would you make it again?
Create a Mini Book:
You can make your book about anything you want. Bring these back to school with you and we will put them in our classroom library for everyone to read during s.s.r. time!
Some ideas could be: sea creatures, farm animals, different sports, favourite movies
Use A4 paper...fold it in half then in half again. Cut along the top so all of the pages open Use tape or staples to keep the book together.
Your book should have:
A front cover
A contents page (you could use the journal you took home as an example of this)
Number all of your pages - starting from the page after the contents page
Information on all pages
Illustrations
Syndicate Singing:
Our songs are:
Take it Easy (by stan Walker)
Don't Forget your Roots (by Six60)
You can find these songs on youtube. We will be sharing these songs with the assembly when we are back at school.
Remember to warm up:
Gi - Bi - Da - Ga........Gi - Bi - Da - Ga........Gi - Bi - Da - Ga........Gi - Bi - Da - Ga........
Sit up/stand up straight. Unfold your arms and let your shoulders sit low and relaxed (they should not move up and down when you sing). Take deep breaths and feel your breath coming from in your tummy (not from your throat). Open your mouth widely and make sure to say the sounds at the ends of the words (the 't' and the 's' etc.)
You are all at different stages for your basic facts. As you achieve one level, you can move through to the next.

Good Luck!!!!!
Who is Jean Batten?
Was she brave? Did she do something that no other woman had ever done before?
Create a mini poster about Jean and what she achieved
Recreate an old photograph of yourself!!!!!
Find an old photo of yourself. Try and recreate the picture. See if you can strike the same pose, same facial expression and see if you can wear something similar to what you wore in the original picture!
Think of a new trick for each Twit to play on the other. Remember we won't be acting these out.
Write your tricky ideas down on paper. You should end up with one trick that Mr. Twit can play on Mrs. Twit - and one trick that Mrs. Twit can play on Mr. Twit!
Use your imagination and create some really funny tricks!
What do you deserve a trophy for?
It could be for kindness, sporting efforts, lock down work you have completed or for just about anything else you can think of (so long as it is positive!)
Reward yourself!!!!!!
Sketch the trophy: add your name to the trophy and the awesome reason you are awarding it to yourself!!!
*Talk to a parent about this first - & plan the call together
Receiving a phone call can be a really encouraging and uplifting thing for the person who is receiving it.
Give a grandparent/uncle/aunt a phone call and check in on them.
Make sure you ask how they are and tell them something you have been doing to be helpful around your house.
Your call might just be the best part of that person's day!!!!!

Earthquake Report:
There have been earthquakes in New Zealand over night and this morning.
Use your researching skills to find out where the earthquakes were, how big they were and any other interesting information about them that you can find.
After you have found your interesting information - write it into a mini 'news report'.
Now pretend that you are a news reader and read out your report to your family. At the end of your report you could say something like "That's all from me, I'm Sandy Simmons from On eNews, now back to you in the studio."
Lockdown level 4 August 2021:
Design a new school uniform for Sandspit road school. Be as creative as you want to be with patterns, colours and logos. Design the top, pants, skort & hat. Send me a picture if you want to! Right now our school logo is a sailing ship...you might like to redesign this to something else? Have fun!
See which level you are on for clapping out syllables. Down the side is the number of syllables in each word. Break the word up into syllables by clapping along while you sday each part of the word. Breaking words into syllables helps us with spelling and understanding how words are formed (root words, prefixes, suffixes etc). Have a go and see which level you are at!
Think of a business for gala day. This is just a business plan not 'for real'.
Your business could be anything from selling a product (like home made soap) through to an activity (like face painting or pop the balloon to win a prize).
You will need to decide on a name for your stall/business
You will need to make a list of all the things you will need to make your product - or if you are doing an activity you will need to make a list of the things you need for the activity.
You will need to do a costing...you will need to 'buy' certain things (ingredients, prizes etc) to make or organise your stall. List the things you need and how much you think yu will need to spend on each item (for example - if I was face painting I would need to buy quite a lot of face paint, sponges, tissues etc
Face paint - $50
Sponges - $10
Tissues - $10
You will need to decide on how big your FLOAT (the money in your cash register you start the day off with - remember this needs to be taken off your earnings at the end of the day to work out your profit...in class we decided on $50 but you can decide how much you need)
Design a sign for your stall - including how much you will charge for your goods or activity
Based on the amount you spent purchasing the things you need to make your product and subtracting the float - work out how much you will need to sell of your item or activity to break even (back to $0) before your stall begins to make any money
Decide if your business is financially worth doing...could yu make some changes to make the business more profitable (make more money?) Now that you see your plan - would you run this business for a gala day? Why or why not?
Go on a mini-beast hunt! Lay on the grass and see if you can observe any bugs.
See if you can identify each bug you find.
Pick at least one kind of bug to research.
What does it eat? Where does it commonly live? Can you find any interesting facts about it?
Make a 1 page poster (A4 is fine) about the bug/bugs you find in your grass or garden. Include a drawing and the information you found!
Where do you like to go on holiday?
Write about a holiday in the country, by the sea, in a caravan or in a tent!
Include the kinds of foods you ate, the sorts of activities you did as a whanau and your favourite part of the holiday.
As an extra - collect flowers, grasses, shells, stones, twigs, leaves & bits and bobs to create a collage of "A summer holiday"

The inter-yeti
A fun way of learning about internet safety narrated by Stan Walker (really cool)
A mind jar full of water and glitter is a resource that we use with school children to provide something concrete and beautiful for their minds to focus on, in much the same way that a table gives the jar something solid to rest on.
By breathing mindfully, all of their swirling thoughts and feelings will start to settle by themselves – just like the glitter in the jar.
Making a mind jar at home is a great way to talk about the things that are worrying your child, as well as giving them a device to practise mindfulness whenever it’s needed.
Mind jars are especially great to use at bedtime, to help your child calm down and go to sleep.
Your child should choose a different colour of glitter to represent different things that worry them. As they add each colour, your child can talk to you about these worries or concerns, and talk about ways you could work through these.
Glass jar with a lid that seals tightly.
Glitter – two or three different sizes of glitter if possible, in as many colours as you like.
Food colouring (optional).
Two tubes of glitter glue – Don’t skip this ingredient! If you get glitter glue with bright/dark colours this will affect the overall colour of your mind jar. We use pastel colours so we can control the water colour with food colouring. The glue is important as it thickens up the water so the glitter swirls around the jar before settling down.
A kettle of boiling water – get an adult to help you with this.
A stick or small whisk for stirring.
A sheet or two of newspaper
Place the jar on the newspaper, and pour in boiling water until it is about 1⁄4 full (ask a parent or adult helper to do this as the water is very hot and the jar heats quickly!).
Squeeze in the two tubes of glitter glue, and use your stick or whisk to stir, stir, stir until it’s all dissolved.
Pour in some more boiling water until the jar is about 3⁄4 full.
Now add your glitter, one colour at a time. Talk about what each colour represents – for example, you might choose green to represent your worries about schoolwork, and blue for worrying about arguing with a sibling.
Stir!
Add a few drops of the food colouring if you’re using it, and stir again.
Fill the jar with water right up to the top, then stir once more and leave to cool down. When it’s cold, screw the lid on tightly and ta-da! You’ve made a mind jar.
When the mind jar is finished, shake it up. See how all the worries have mixed together, making it hard to focus on any one COLOUR? When our minds are stormy like this, and we don’t feel present in our bodies, it can be hard to pay attention and make kind and thoughtful choices about how to respond to the things or people that have upset or worried us.
Place the jar on a table, and sit or lie quietly, noticing as the glitter in the jar settles down on its own. Practise your mindful breathing while you watch.

Learn your words by saying them out loud and splitting the word into chunks ("gra -pause- ve")
Try write a sentence for each word
Go away for half an hour, then return to your spelling and see if you can remember how to spell them (remember to say them in a rhythm so it is easier to remember them)
As an extra: make your words out of playdough or cut the letters out from a magazine or newspaper and arrange them correctly.
See how many words you can make from the letters used in the word:
MERMAID
You can only use each letter once
The letters can be in any order
You can use as few letters as you need
See if you can make at least 10 (there are heaps)
Get a piece of paper and see if you can write these very large numbers correctly in number form.
For example:
sixteen thousand two hundred and eighty-one = 16,281
Remember the order of numbers:
Tens of thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones/units
fifty-five thousand six hundred and twelve
Thirty-nine thousand four hundred and seventeen
seventy thousand one hundred and seven
Eleven thousand two hundred and nine
Sixty-six thousand nine hundred and eighty-four
Eighty-five thousand three hundred and fifty-five
Twenty-nine thousand nine hundred and twenty
*If you're an expert - ask your parents to give you numbers in the hundreds of thousands to try and record
Create your own Monster Island
Draw your island. Draw your monsters. Answer these questions:
Decide on:
The types of monsters that live on your island (what do they look like, sound like, move like?)
What is the landsscape like? Is it rocky, woodlands, swampy etc
What do your monsters eat?
What are the dangers there (could include dangers to your monsters or other dangers like quick sand etc)
What do your monsters do for fun?
Are your monsters civilised? Do they go to school? Or are your monsters brutes and unruly characters?
This is a great tool to practice reading and maths & it has follow up activities and games to go with the reading and maths

Cook your family a meal!!!
Preparing food and eating together as a family unit is a special thing.
When we prepare food, we can appreciate the effort that goes into getting a meal ready for others.
When we eat together, we can be grateful.
When we clean up, we are showing respect to others that share our home.
The Task:
Prepare a meal for your family/bubble
Go around the table and say something you are thankful & grateful for (everyone takes a turn)
Wash up the dishes as a family (this is important too)

Short & Sweet Summaries
A summary is a short and sweet retelling of a text. It only includes the most important details. Use the writing strategy of "Somebody Wanted But So Then" to help you write a short fiction summary!
Part 1
Directions: Read the passage and write a short summary.
Elias was assigned a big project in his social studies class. He wanted to do well on the project, but he knew it was a lot of work. He thought it would be boring, too. Elias had two weeks until the due date. Elias could have gone home and started the project. Instead, he put it off. He went skateboarding with his friends at the park, and he played video games with his brother. When his mom suggested he clean his room, Elias happily cleaned. He chose to do anything other than the project.
Elias suddenly panicked as he remembered the due date. The project was due tomorrow! He hadn't even started. He was too afraid to tell his mom. She would not be happy about this. Immediately, Elias began scrambling to figure out how he could get the project done on time.
At school the next day, Elias turned in his finished product. Elias was not proud of the work he had completed. He believed it would have been much better if he spent more time on it. Elias wished that he had been more responsible.
Somebody
Wanted
But
So
then
Part 2
Directions: Write a 3-sentence summary on the lines below. Use the information from the Part 1 chart. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________
Use items from your recycling to create your own instrument!
You could use anything you like to make it.
Some suggestions are: rice (inside a kitchen roll) rainmaker, bottle guitar using rubber bands, bottles to make drums, paint/tin cans to make drums...
Make it beautiful and share a picture with me!
Use your home clock to practice telling the time.
Remember to use your five times tables to give you the answer for the big hand (up to 6)... For the second half of the clock, use your five times tables to give you a number (5 x 9 = 45) and then see how many more minutes you need to get to the hour/60minutes (5x9=45 do it will be 15 more minutes to get from 45 to 60)
Look up at the clock throughout the day and practice this.
Good luck!
For experts, try learning 24 hour time. After we reach 12:00pm, there is another 12 hours to go before the next day begins. We count on 13 (for 1), 14 (for 2), 15 (for 3) and so on until we reach 24 hours.
Their There They‛re
Homophones sound the same, but have different meanings.
Their - Possessive, belonging to them
There - An adverb, a location
They‛re - A contraction of they and are
Write THEIR, THERE or THEY‛RE in the spaces below.
1. “ ___________ up first,” I told the team. Everyone ran out to ____________ places on the field. I walked to the mound. It was my first time pitching.
2. The air was perfectly still. ___________ wasn‛t the slightest breeze. I wound up, then gave the pitch all I had. “Ball!” the umpire called.
3. ___________ were still three more balls to go. I took a deep breath, and
concentrated.
4. From the stands I heard chanting, “___________ gonna lose! We‛re gonna win! ___________ gonna lose! We‛re gonna win!”
5. I tuned out the chanting, and thought only of the baseball in my hand, and the pitcher‛s glove. This one would be a strike, I thought to myself. ___________ wasn‛t going to be another ball.
6. I looked at the opposite team leaning against the chain link fence. ___________ faces were tense with determination. I threw. “Ball!” called the umpire.
7. For a moment I closed my eyes. Then I wound up for my third pitch. I threw hard and fast. With a loud crack, the bat hit the ball, which flew toward me.
____________ wasn‛t a moment to think. I lifted my glove and caught the ball.
8. “Out!” yelled the umpire. I turned to my team, and saw smiles on _____________ faces. Only two more outs to go.

When we set a scene in our writing, we add depth, interest and important detail to set up our story.
Setting the scene is an important way to start our story and helps the reader to create a picture in their mind.
When you have completed the 'Create a title' activity with your teacher, you can move on to this activity.
Use the following questions to help you to write the beginning of your story - by setting the scene.
Where does the scene take place?
What can the character see, hear, smell?
How does the character feel in these beginning moments of your story?
What do the immediate surroundings look like?
What time of day is it?
What do the characters facial expressions look like?
What are they physically doing at that moment?
What do their voices sound like?
Write as you would normally whilst answering these questions (do not number your answers - write them into your story)
Please bring along something to write with and some paper/book

Setting the scene: Here is my attempt
You could say: An old grey road swept through the murky, snow covered arms of the windy trees who stood alongside the stretch of road, as if they were protecting it from the outside world. Barely any light shone through the tops of the creaky, ancient trees but you could just see a glimpse of the sun's rays as they penetrated the canopy that sat like a roof over the old road. The air was crisp and fresh and you could taste the alpine snow in the air. Ice crystals hung off the low branches, glistening as they caught a rare glimpse of light from the sun.
Setting the scene means providing the reader with a visual picture in their mind of where the story is taking place. A good writer will set a scene so as the reader can imagine exactly where the story is taking place and exactly what is happening. When you set the scene well, the reader is hooked in very quickly and wants to read on to find out what happens next.
Look at the pictures and write sentences setting the scene for each. Do not include any information about characters or anything other than what you see in the picture and what you want the reader to see in their mind.
Set the scene for this picture...
Remember to use your best descriptive words!
Add some interesting words to the following sentences to make them pop
One night a girl went outside (could be: One cold, moonless night a young girl went outside into the wild night)
One day I found a bird (could be: One scorching hot summer day I found a rare and colourful bird)
Part of setting the scene is describing the landscape. Sometimes a great opening to a story can be a detailed description of what you want the reader to see in their mind.

Decide on what you would like to show the transformation of. Take a photo of 'before' the transformation and 'after' the transformation
This could be anything from:
A messy room to a tidy room
Your hair before it is done & after it is done
Ingredients before cooking and after it is cooked
Your face before face paint and then after your face is painted
A puzzle before the pieces are put together and after the puzzle is completed
Share your transformation pictures with me!
Pretend you are stranded on an island, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. You decide to write a message and put it in a bottle - hoping someone will see it to rescue you!
What information will you include?
What do you want people to know about you?
What can you see around you to help the rescue team find you?
What are the conditions like there (do you have shelter, food, water?)
Combine three animals to create a new animal!
Select three animals you want to combine
Decide which parts each animal you will combine
Draw your new animal creation
Label the parts of your new animal
Give your animal a name
Decide where your animal lives (habitat)
What does your animal eat?
What special qualities does your animal have? (Can it swim, fly, dig, climb etc)

A Passion Project is a research based project where you get to decide on the topic!
First you need to think of something to research! Pick something you are interested in (this could be anything from: the history of your favourite sport, a place, your favourite animal, a person you find interesting who has achieved something - or really anything that you are interested in finding out about!)
Next you need to use your computer to find out information. You could open a google doc to store information you find along the way, then come back to that information when you are done researching and select which information you want to use.
Choose how you want to display your information! You could make a poster, a little booklet, create a google slideshow or write a report.
You could insert images or draw pictures that relate to your topic.
First you need to select a country to research. You could pick a country that your family has links to - or you could pick a country you would like to visit...it is up to you!
Find out the following:
How many people live there
What does their flag look like?
What are their signature dishes (the foods they eat)
What do they wear?
What are the temperatures in both summer and winter there (this could be a range of temperatures especially if you pick a large country)
Do they have a national dance or song?
What animals are native to your country?
What is the terrain like there?
Anything else you want to include

How to make a POI
You will need . . .
*A plastic bag
*Stuffing- fluff etc.. DON'T use toilet paper, because toilet paper is too hard on your hands.
*Wool
* Cellotape
* First you get some wool about the length of your forearm (from your elbow to your middle finger tip). This will make a short poi. If you want to make a long poi, the length of the wool should be from your shoulder to the tip of your middle finger. You will need six strands of wool.
* Next you tie a knot at one end and then you do a 3 plait starting from the knot. Make sure when you finish plaiting you knot the other end leaving enough strands of wool to tie around the ball of stuffing.
*Grab a bunch of stuffing and scrunch it up into a ball about the size of a fist. Put the leftover strands around the ball of stuffing and tie the strands to hold the ball in place.
*Then put the plastic bag over the stuffing and gather it at the last knot you made and tie with wool or string to hold it together.
*Trim the plastic beneath the tie.
*To finish off wrap cellotape around the tie.
Flax Leaves (1 per flower)
Little beads or shells I used Paua shell.
Needle
Split the flax in half (from the sharp point down) but leave about 15 cm still joined (leave longer if you want a longer stem)
Lie the flax flat on a table and start by crossing the left leaf under the right one. Then fold that now left one back under the right one.
Then continue to fold the one that’s now on the left under the right one, and you are going to keep doing this same pattern until you get to the end. So, to recap always fold the one that is on the left under the one that’s on the right.
Eventually, you will get to the end of the leaf and because of the way the folds work it ends up in the shape of a flower.
Pull it around in a circle quite tight so that it almost looks like a rose. Then you want to get your pieces of shell or paua, needle and nylon.
Thread through the leaf and then through your shell or bead. Thread back to the backside of the flower and then to the front again and continuing to the back again – knot it off.
These can make a neat little gift as you can pop them in a box and post them – could be a great gift idea for the grandparents!

Crawling (could be through something)
Hopping
Running
swerving around something
Moving backwards
Make it fun and time yourself! See if you can beat your time.

Tortoises are reptiles
All tortoises are in fact turtles—that is, they belong to the order Testudines or Chelonia, reptiles having bodies encased in a bony shell—but not all turtles are tortoises.
Why is a tortoise a reptile?
Tortoises are reptiles because they have scales and dry skin, they are cold-blooded, and they are descended from dinosaurs. ... The simplest definition of a reptile is a cold-blooded vertebrate (an animal with a backbone) with dry skin that may have scales or plates.
Find me some facts about TORTOISES and share them with me.

ROSIE AND RUBY GET LOST - written by Milan
ROSIE AND RUBY GET LOST
Rosie and Ruby are cute playful puppies that are always getting into a lot of trouble. They live in a nice house with a large backyard with their fun owner Sam.
One Saturday they drove to the pet store to get some dog food. “You guys stay here and I'll be back in a second” said Sam to Rosie and Ruby. But as soon as he was out of sight, the naughty puppies squeezed out of the open window of the car, and went to see where the delicious smell was coming from.
They sniffed around the store and hit the jackpot – a huge tub of pigs ears! They jumped up and ate as much as they could before one of the pet store owners spotted them. “Oi! Get out of there!” he said, and the puppies ran and hid. Once the drama calmed down, Rosie and Ruby came out of hiding and went to find Sam.
Rosie went up to a pair of hairy ankles and had a good sniff. “Stop that!” said the hairy-legged man. Ruby found a pair of thick ankles wearing giant high heeled shoes almost as tall as her! “They don’t look like Sam’s shoes” thought Ruby and with that ran away.
“I think we are lost” whined Ruby to Rosie. Suddenly Sam walked past, and said “Where have you two been? I have been looking all over for you! Let’s get you back home where you won’t cause any more trouble.” He scooped them up, put them in the car and drove them home.
They didn’t eat much dinner that night because they still had full bellies from their awesome adventure!

Create a mindmap of all of the best things that have happened during lockdown.
Start with a 'cloud' in the middle of your page. Inside the cloud write 'the best parts of lockdown'.
When you think of an idea, draw a line out from that cloud and rite your idea.
When you have a new idea which stems (or is generated) from a previous idea, draw a new line and add your new idea - connecting it to the other idea.
For example: I might draw a line from the cloud in the middle and add the idea 'Family exercise'. Then I might start to remember the cool ways we exercised and draw a line coming from that original idea an add 'beach walk'. Then I might add to the beach walk idea with 'collecting shells'
Have fun recording and linking all of your lockdown fun!
Create a mini Rosie and Ruby - origami dog. (five minute video)
I bet some of you are missing takeaway foods!
Create a takeaway menu for your very own Level 2 Lockdown Takeaway Bar.
List the items you sell, along with their prices.
Next, create 'meal deals' where you add multiple items from the list you sell to create 'combos'. Give these combos prices too!
Don't forget to name your takeaway bar something cool!
Extra:
You could create pictures to go along with some of your meals
You could try making one of your combos for dinner!

Use this format to create a poem.
Here in NZ we are very lucky. It is good for us to express our gratitude and say why we feel lucky.
In this poem, you get to tell me why you feel lucky.
You can include any reason you consider yourself lucky (this could be around your family, the experiences you have, your friends, your hobbies or anything you feel grateful about).
The process: The first line is always 'I am so very lucky'. The second line is where you say why you are lucky. If you want to, you can try rhyme the last word of the first two things you feel lucky about and the last two things you feel lucky about (I have made the line green where you need to rhyme). Here is my example:
I am so vry lucky,
I have good friends care for me.
I am so very lucky,
I have a kind family.
I am so very lucky,
To work with children each day.
I am so very lucky,
My guitar - I love to play.
I am so very lucky,

Please click on the link below called Reading. This will take you to a site where you can read a little about the history of clay. This will be considered your reading for the day.
Reading Link
Hand building clay.
This is the earliest forming method. Wares can be constructed by hand from coils of clay, combining flat slabs of clay, or pinching solid balls of clay or some combination of these.
Parts of hand-built vessels are often joined together using clay and water.
Clay vessels were very important in the old days - as you needed them to store water and other important oils.
Design an unusual 'vessel'
Try to imagine an interesting shape - remembering the vessel needs to be able to balance when standing up.
Add your own design features - how can you make yours look different to other peoples?
Sketch your vessel - add on your interesting and original design features. Colour your vessel and take a pic!

Rosie’s wild winter nightime adventure - By Carter M
Rosie’s wild winter nightime adventure
One stormy night Rosie got scared of the noise that the lightening made so she decided to jump the fence. It was really large fence so she jumped onto the vegetable garden box and then onto the window sill which gave her enough height to be able to jump the fence.
She raced off down to the park to look for other dog friends they she sees on her daily walk but they were all tucked up at home in their cosy kennel.
Suddenly the thunder started banging, the lightening started striking which gave Rosie a big fright so she ran back to the house. Trying to jump back ove the fence she hurt her leg by catching it on the fence.
I woke up to Rosie barking outside my bedroom window. I was confused because she was on the wrong side of the house. I never hear her bark on that side of the house. It sounded like she had escaped.
I woke up Mum and said “quick Rosie has escaped”. We picked up Rosie and put her back in her kennel for the rest of the night. It wasn’t until the next day we found out that Rosies was limping.
We took Rosie to the vet and they put a bandage on her foot and said its just a bruise that can be fixed with lots of rest.

Learn to play Crazy 8s. Watch this cool video to learn how to play the game. You only need two players and a pack of regular playing cards.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!!!!
Find an empty/used tea bag box (or something like that)...
Use whatever materials you have around your house to turn it into a keepsake box (somewhere you can keep precious items in).
You could use paint, wrapping paper, stick on gems, stickers, glued on magazine pictures, use photographs of yourself...the choice is endless.
When you have finished, put some special things inside and send me a picture!!!!
Learn some magic - you could have a little magic show at your house!
Part of looking after our environment is looking after our own backyard!
Pull some weeds from the garden & put the pile of weeds in a place your parents designate
see if you can spot earthworms....if you can - then you have healthy soil!
See if you can identify old, dead leaves on a plant and help a parent pull/cut them away to give the plant 'new life' (dead leaves steal energy from your plants)
See if any plants need repotting or relocating to a more suitable spot (more sun/less sun etc)
Identify if you have any native plants to NZ in yur garden
Sketch your favourite plant from the garden - sit outside by the plant and try to create the same shaped leaves, stem and flowers.

Create a poster for your bedroom door!
Add pictures of things you like (these could be drawn by you, they could be photographs, or they could be cut out from magazines!)
Add any messages you need people to know before entering your room
(these could be things like... Beware - messy room ahead, No girls/Boys allowed, Enter if you're cute, Please enter with a smile etc)
You could use fancy writing and your favourite colours.
DO NOT stick your poster on your door without checking with your family first (they can decide what to use to stick the poster up, they can check there is nothing offensive on your poster)
Have fun!
If the poster isn't for you... Try creating a fancy nametag for your bedroom door.
You could try use some really cool lettering and use awesome bright colours.
You could make your nametag have a really cool border and add on anything you'd like.
Do not put it up without checking first please!

Work on shading and creating shadows by trying to sketch my picture.
In this picture, we have mountains as the background.
In the foreground we have an old tree.
Start using whisper lines to get your shape right, then add in talking lines and finally shouting lines
We need to decide which direction the sun is coming from. All of our shadow parts will be on the same side (if you have your shadow on the right hand side of your mountains then your shadow will be on the right hand side of the tree).
Think about the shape of the trunk and the branches of your tree. If you want to, you could go look outside and find a tree to sketch.
Notice my tree does not have detail - this is because I am concentrating on the overall shape and the shading rather than detail.
Have a go and have fun!

A recount is a piece of writing where the author is retelling or recounting an event or an experience. The purpose is to tell what happened.
Step 1 (ORIENTATION) Introductory paragraph that tells who, what, where, and when.
Step 2 (EVENTS) A sequence of events in the order in which they occurred.
Step 3 (CONCLUSION/RE-ORIENTATION) A conclusion where the writer can wrap up their telling of events by including how they felt about the experience overall.
Write a recount of your school holidays. Include fun things you did in the order you did them. Remember - this is not a list because you need to expand on your ideas and say something about the activity you are including in your recount.
You can send these to me!
Use LEGO to put your construction skills to the test and create some kind of a building out of lego.
Your building can be any shape and height.
You can use any kind of lego bricks available to you.
I am looking for creativity and to see you problem solve to create your building.
For extra interest - find a toy that can go alongside your building to help me identify the kind of building it is (a barn, a castle, a school etc)
Take a photo of your building!
Below is a piece of writing....and it is SO BORING!
Can you help me fix this writing by rewriting it - making it interesting?
A boy woke up. He looked outside. It was raining. He put on his coat and went out into the rain. He walked around the garden. The boy was wet but he didn't mind. The rain fell on the boy's face and the boy thought it felt nice. After a while he went inside. He was very wet.

Below is a time table. This might help give you a guide for the day to help you spread out your learning. This is just a suggestion - if you have another structure you are using, please feel free to continue using what works best for you and your family.
LEARNING YOUR WORDS
LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK
LOOK at the word you want to learn, and I mean really look. Which bits of the spelling are easy and which are not so obvious? Mark the 'hard spots', that is the difficult part of the word, using a different coloured pen. Is the word similar in spelling to another word that has a related meaning? Can you break it into parts? Have a really good look and think about the spelling until you think you can spell it.
SAY the word, while looking at it. Is the spelling a reflection of the sound? If not what is different?
COVER the word with your hand or a piece of paper. Close your eyes and try to 'see' the word in your head.
WRITE it.
CHECK your spelling by uncovering the word and comparing it with your spelling. Check it letter by letter. If it's wrong, start again; if it's right, celebrate how clever you are.
(Level 2 (Year 3 & 4 students):
Students who are spelling proficiently at level 2 will be able to spell most high frequency words (Lists 1-4) correctly.
Level 3 (Year 5 & 6 students):
Students who are spelling proficiently at level 3 will be able to spell most high frequency words (Lists 1-6) correctly.)

*Please check with your parents before contacting anyone for your interview!
First you need to decide on who you will interview and what you will interview them about. You can interview someone in your family - or someone you know (who you can speak to on the phone or via a zoom call). Think about what you might like to know more about...is it a hobby like fishing? Is it an occupation like firefighting? Once you have decided who you will interview & what you will interview them about, you can move on to the next part...
Think about the kinds of things you might like to ask them first.
You might find it helpful discussing your ideas with someone out loud.
Next write your questions down (numbering them as you go). Leave space so as you can record the answers to your questions once you get them!
Try to ask a variety of questions. Try to ask questions to require more than a yes or no answer.
Now you are ready to do your interview.
Remember to:
Thank whoever it is you interview for answering your questions
Tell them why you are interested in finding out more about your topic.
If you are not sure of an answer, don't be shy & ask them to explain it again or repeat themselves.
I would love you to do this interview verbally rather than writing your questions and emailing them to someone, if preferable.
Adding and subtracting with 7
There are different ways/different strategies you can use to help you add or subtract 7.
Two ways are:
To add on with 7 - you can make ten then take 3 off (25+7= add ten (35) then minus 3 = 32
Another way to add on with 7 - is to add 5 then add on two (25+7 = add five (30) then add two = 32
Lets try some sums where you can try out adding 7
33 + 7 =
14 + 7 =
77 + 7 =
45 + 7 =
56 + 7 =
114 + 7 =
92 + 7 =
18 + 7 =
215 + 7 =

Compare these two very different 'bears'
Split your page into two. On one side write 'Polar Bear' and on the other write 'Panda Bear'.
Find facts about each and write these down in bullet points (not big long sentences just the main idea written simply) under each bear.
Once you have found your facts select two highlighter colours (can be crayons).
Use one colour to highlight all of the things both bears have in common.
Use another colour to highlight their differences.
Once you have done this, count up the similarities and then count up the differences.
Write a statement saying whether you think they are more similar, or more different.
Smaller in the distance
Fill the space
Show perspective
Overlapping shapes
Handwriting
Your goals for handwriting are:
To form all of your letters correctly
To hold your pencil correctly
To achieve a consistent size for all of your letters
To slope your letters slightly forwards
To add a flick on to the end of appropriate letters
Copy the following text, in your neatest writing:
Aaaa Bbbb Cccc Dddd Eeee Ffff Gggg Hhhh Iiii Jjjj Kkkk Llll Mmmm Nnnn Oooo Pppp Qqqq Rrrr Ssss Tttt Uuuu Vvvv Wwww Xxxx Yyyy Zzzz

**Don't forget to use capital letters and fullstops & to play around with other punctuation too like speech marks, exclamation marks, question marks, commas etc
subtracting with 7
There are different ways/different strategies you can use to help you subtract 7.
Three ways are:
To subtract with 7 - you can count up from your known part ( 9 - 7 = "start at your known number which is 7 then count on eight, nine - you said two numbers so the answer is two)
Another way to add on with 7 - is to subtract 5 then subtract two more (25-7 = subtract five (20) then subtract two more = 18
You can use known facts to help you such as 7 + 6 = 13 therefore 13 - 7 = 6
Lets try some sums where you can try out subtracting 7
20 - 7 =
37 - 7 =
14 - 7 =
45 - 7 =
65 - 7 =
109 - 7 =

What is triple 40?
What is the seventh month of the year?
Create your own string phone - science activity String phone on youtube
Create your own stop motion video!
It probably works best if you download an app like stop motion cartoon maker (but you do not have to do it this way).
Stop motion is where you use your toys as the characters in your movie.
You arrange your toys in their starting position and take a photograph of them.
Next you move them very slightly and take another photograph.
You continue to change your characters poses or move them along as if they are walking - and each time you move them you take another photograph.
You will need to take quite a lot of pictures because when you turn them into a movie - it will be short unless you have taken a lot of pictures with a lot of movements.
See if you can 'tell a story' using your toys (such as little red riding hood).

Pretend we are getting a class pet.
First decide what kind of animal we are getting (it can be any animal you want - even if it isn't native to NZ).
Next decide on a name for our class pet.
Now think about what kind of environment we need to set up within our class for our pet. Do we need a tank? Do we need an area with a comfy bed & toys? Do we need a cage?
What food will our pet eat? How often will we feed it? Will there be any safety precautions when we feed it?
Now consider any extra things we will need to do to keep our pet happy. Will we play with it? If so do we need toys? Will it need grooming or cleaning? How will we clean the enclosure?
Lastly, draw me a picture of our new class pet in our classroom!
Put these words into alphabetical order for me....as fast as you can.
Scan each word to see which word starts with the letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet.
If more than one word start with the same letter, move to the second letter in that word and check which of those comes first/earliest in the alphabet.
If the second letter is also the same, look at the third letter.
Time yourself to make it fun - see how quickly you can order these words:
Rough
Round
Rainbow
Rose
Rabbit
Rush
Rock
Rip
Real
Right
Find a joke to tell the class on our zoom call for Wednesday.
Make sure it is appropriate.
Make sure you have it written down so you are confident when you tell your joke.
You may say pass when we get to you, if you are too shy to share.
Math Daily 10
If you have five groups with six in each group, how many do you have altogether?
How do you write nine lots of seven as an equation?
Jenny picked 24 apples. She made 13 of them into apple pie. How many were left over?
If you times something by zero, the answer will always be:
What is the 12th month of the year?
What is another way you could say 3 x 4 = 12?
How many tens are here in 200?
In the number 18,625 which number is in the hundreds column?
Write a number that shows over ten thousand
What is four lots of forty?
Remember:
Sit your letters on the line
Write with a slight slope
Flick the appropriate letters
Form your letters correctly
Space your letters evenly
Keep a consistent pressure on your pencil and hold your pencil correctly
** Practice writing your family details (keep this work private & do not share with others)
Write your full name: e.g. Sarah Louise Brady Salisbury
Write your address: 60 Sandspit road, Waiuku
Write your parent's phone number: 2127583738
Write a sentence identifying how many people are in your family: There are five people in my family - two adults and three children.
Pretend you and your friends are secret agents who solve mysteries around our town.
Come up with a story based on you and your secret agent friends uncovering and solving a mystery.
Roughly plan it out before you start so you know exactly what the mystery will be and how you will solve it.
Write your story (or use the talk to text feature on your device if applicable).
Remember to read back through what you have written and add in details you might have missed or remove anything that didn't make sense.
Read your story to a family member and ask for feedback....what did they like about it? What could you add to improve it?
Go on to Study Ladder - and complete another one of the reading activities I have set (nonfiction)

Find information on your story (this could be a news report video, from the newspaper, online etc).
Select the key information for you to report on & write this down into your own report. Remember to introduce your topic, then provide at least three key interesting facts or pieces of information to report on and then conclude your report by stating what might happen in the future or wrapping up your writing in some way.
Next, you could film yourself 'reading the news' (you could even dress up as a news reporter if you wanted to.

If you are not sure what to make - Look at the things you have collected & let the items inspire you....ask yourself "what could I make out of this?"
Sketch a quick plan before you start constructing. This will give you an idea of what it might look like when you have finished constructing it.
Next, build it! Then use paint, felt tips, wrapping paper, glitter, stickers or whatever else you have lying around to decorate it.
Take a picture of your construction & send it to me!
This writing activity is a bit silly.
The idea is that you are writing as if you are ordering a pizza....the only thing is...I want the pizza to be really weird and unusual.
Think about the different strange things you might ask to have on the pizza (strange sauces, very unusual toppings).
Even make up a really different name to place the order under (instead of your usual name.)
Read your writing out loud to yourself after each sentence to make sure that it makes sense. Add in any words you might have missed or remove anything that doesn't make sense or shouldn't be there.
Extra For Experts:
Draw your pizza with all of the crazy toppings
Read your writing to someone in the household

When you are passionate about something - it is very interesting to you and learning about it can be really exciting and hold your attention.
Think of something you love... this could be a sport, an animal, a country, the ocean (or anything else you feel passionate about).
Now you have decided on what to study - you need to do some research about your topic.
It is your choice which facts, information, pictures, stories and diagrams you include.
It is your choice how you want to record and present your information. You could make a booklet, a poster, a video, a brochure, a vision board - or any other way you want to present your project.
You can research using the computer, books you might have on the subject, or talk to experts.
The most important thing is you spend time further understanding the topic - developing your passion further and then share your project with others.
I would love to see your project! If you have any questions I am here to answer them.
Good Luck & ENJOY!!!!!
You will need:
Plain white paper (A4 size is best)
A pencil
A rubber
A positive mindset
Continuing on from our last drawing session - we are looking at drawing a human face.
A human head can be thought of as an upside down egg shape.
The vertical centre line helps us to create a symmetrical face (the same on both sides).
The horizontal lines help us with our placement of our facial features.
The bottom horizontal line is where the end of our nose should finish as well as where the bottom of our ears should finish. The top horizontal line is where we should place our eyes.
Have a go at sketching a face.
You can use a mirror to help guide you (look at your face in the mirror, then sketch a feature).
Use whisper lines to start - so you can easily rub out anything that doesn't look right.
When you are happy with your basic features you can start to use talking lines to add more detail.
Look at your hair in the mirror and notice how it falls/the way it sits and where your hairline begins. Note that if you have long hair, it sits around your neck (there is no gap there).
It is ok to start again if you need to. There is no pressure to have a perfect drawing - these things take time to practice so don't be hard on yourself if it doesn't look quite right the first time you do it.

Week's Work:
a) Storytelling: retell a well known story. Try and remember the important details. Include character description. Use correct punctuation. Illustrate your story
b) Change a tale: Think of a well known fairytale. Change the story so that the evil character comes out on top. Think about how you could adapt the story so as the 'hero' becomes the villain and the villain becomes the hero.
c) Make a kite using a plastic bag and string/wool. Decorate the front and back of the plastic bag using vivids. Go out and try and fly your kite in the wind.
d) Design a barnyard. Dra up a plan for an awesome barn and yard. Include the stalls and stables, include which animals you will have, feeding areas, play areas, fields. Challenge: add something unusual to your barn and to the yard.
