2023 IRES Students
Hi! I'm Cevi Bainton and I'm a senior majoring in Mathematical and Computational Biology. Bioinformatics is a powerful tool to examine our own biology with new assays and more advanced approaches than ever before. I hope to work on modelling cancer and disease progression through higher resolution personalized scientific discovery.
I'm looking forward to learning everything about Sweden and spending time in a new kind of lab setting!
Hello! My name is Francisco Contreras and my major is in Computer Science. I am currently a 4th year with the upcoming fall semester being my last semester. What excites me about bioinformatics is that we can look at how humans work through science and seeing how different things such as exercises or diseases affects us. What I look forward to in this program is being able to work in a professional setting and also being able to experience it somewhere outside the United States.
Hey! My name is Marissa Esteban and I am a junior studying computer science with a minor in visual arts and math here at the University of San Diego. I am most excited to explore a new realm of computer science, most especially to do so under some of the world's leading bioinformaticians. In our lab, we will be classifying images of breast cancer tissues as either invasive or non-invasive using spatial transcriptomic data.
Hi, my name is Abby Gantenbein. I am an incoming senior at University of San Diego studying Biomedical Engineering. I am really excited to learn more about bioinformatics, specifically how you can understand more about the organization of DNA. Additionally I am looking forward to getting research experience. I am very excited to explore Sweden and learn more about Swedish culture!
Hello! I'm Lucia Morales and I'm a rising senior majoring in Biology. Bioinformatics interests me as a tool with which to conduct other science. I am primarily interested in doing tissue engineering research, which I can apply parts of bioinformatics to in order to help me understand what the data I'm collecting actually means.
I'm most looking forward to working in a new lab in a new country and being able to explore!
Hello! My name is Chris Schafer and I am an incoming senior at the University of San Diego. Within bioinformatics, I am interested in looking at how exercise affects the different genes within our DNA. This summer, in addition to doing research in that area, I am looking forward to exploring Stockholm as well as other cities around Europe!
Mark Chapman, NSF-IRES Program Director
Hello! My name is Mark Chapman and I am an assistant professor of integrated engineering at the University of San Diego. I joined the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering in 2019 to define, develop and teach the biomedical engineering concentration area within the integrated engineering major. In 2020, I was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to create this IRES program. This program provides students with an opportunity to explore a career in bioinformatics research and it also gives them a unique opportunity to live and work abroad in one of Europe's most beautiful cities! Additionally, I was a postdoctoral researcher in Stockholm from 2015-2018, and this program helps me strengthen my existing research collaborations in Sweden. 2023 marks the third year and final year of the grant and I am excited for this year's strong cohort of students!
