2022 IRES Students
Hey, I'm Occam, a senior at Harvey Mudd College majoring in mathematical and computational biology with an emphasis in environmental analysis. My primary interest is in understanding different methods and pathways for regulation of gene expression, and I enjoy finding computationally efficient ways to analyze large sets of biological data. I'm looking forward to learning more about bioinformatics through practice, and I'm excited to experience the world outside of the United States for the first time.
Hi! I'm Claire and I'm a rising senior at Pomona College where I am majoring in Computer Science and Molecular Biology. I am very interested in how computational methods can be used to model biological processes, and particularly interesed in how they can be used to better understand the human genome. I'm excited to learn more about bioinformatics this summer, as well as to explore all the amazing nature and food that Stockholm has to offer!
Hi, I'm Molly and I am a senior at the University of San Diego studying biomedical engineering. I am interested in gene expression, more specifically, determining which genes code for certain diseases and physical abilities and how they relate to human health. I am looking forward to exploring Sweden and working with experienced bioinformaticians.
Hello! I'm Sean, a rising senior at Pomona College majoring in biology and minoring in math. My interests lie in the ecological applications of bioinformatics, specifically areas of adaptation on a genetic basis, molecular components of trait evolution, and speciation with an emphasis on gene flow. I absolutely love to travel and I can't wait to explore Sweden's amazing sights and interesting culture this summer!
Hello, I am Ismael, currently a senior at California State University - Los Angeles majoring in computer science. I have experience working in web development, software engineering, and data science. I have been working with a mentor for the previous year who has sparked my interest in bioinformatics and it's wonderful connection it has with computer science. I am looking forward to exploring Stockholm, hiking the beautiful trails that Sweden, and working with professional bioinformaticians.
Hey, I'm Trenton. I am a rising senior majoring in Computational/Mathematical Biology. I love to code, and molecular genetics has always been a fascinating subject for me. Bioinformatics is a nice sweet spot that allows me to conduct research on biology topics that I enjoy using computational techniques that I enjoy performing. I'm thrilled to conduct bioinformatics research in an environment outside of my comfort zone. I also look forward to exploring the different areas of Stockholm and trying out new foods.
Mark Chapman, NSF-IRES Program Director
Hello! My name is Mark Chapman and I am an assistant professor of integrated engineering at the University of San Diego. I joined the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering in 2019 to define, develop and teach the biomedical engineering concentration area within the integrated engineering major. In 2020, I was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to create this IRES program. This opportunity provides students with an opportunity to explore a career in bioinformatics research and it also gives them a unique opportunity to live and work abroad in one of Europe's most beautiful cities! Additionally, I was a postdoctoral researcher in Stockholm from 2015-2018, and this program helps me strengthen my existing research collaborations in Sweden. 2022 marks the second year of this three year grant and I am excited for this year's strong cohort of students!
