As a reminder we ask that candy is kept at home as a treat for after school, and not sent as a treat in Stingray lunches.
Thank you for your help with this.
In order to provide a healthy school environment for all students and staff, the following guidelines have been prepared to assist you in decisions relating to your student’s health and school attendance. These are general guidelines. School nurses/health techs may use clinical judgment to decide whether or not to exclude a student.
If your student is not feeling well and you are uncertain about sending them to school on any given day, it is best to keep your student home and observe them for worsening symptoms.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND A STUDENT TO SCHOOL WITH THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS TO SCHOOL:
COLD/FLU: If difficulty breathing, looks/acts very ill or cannot participate.
COLD SORES: If they drool or place toys in their mouths when they have cold sores
COUGH/SHORTNESS OF BREATH/DIFFICULTY BREATHING: if there is labored breathing (heaving chest muscles with each breath), fast breathing at rest, blue color to skin, or wheezing (if never previously evaluated and treated). Students may come to school if symptoms are part of a diagnosed, underlying non-infectious condition.
DIARRHEA: If stool cannot be contained in a diaper or child cannot make it to the toilet in time, or if stool is black, or has blood or mucus. May return to school once diarrhea can be contained, even if not completely resolved. If blood or mucus in stool or on antibiotics, get doctor clearance first.
EYE INFECTION: If infection is associated with significant eye drainage or watering.
FEVER/CHILLS: If temperatures are at or above, 100.4. Students may return to school when they have been fever-free without fever-reducing medications for 24 hours.
HEADACHE: If severe headache with vomiting or stiff neck. Please contact your child’s primary care physician for further evaluation.
RASH THAT IS UNDIAGNOSED: Stay at home if there’s fever or recently exposed to measles or chickenpox. If so, the student must have a rash diagnosed by a healthcare professional. If diagnosed with impetigo, scabies, or ringworm, then return to school when skin sores are either all dried up or can be covered by clothing or bandage OR if antibiotic treatment was started the previous day.
SORE THROAT: If they cannot swallow, have excessive drooling, difficulty breathing, fever or behavior change.
STOMACHACHE: If severe pain causes doubling over, crying, screaming abdominal injury, diarrhea, vomiting, looks and acts ill.
VOMITING/NAUSEA: If they have vomited two or more times within the past 24 hours. Return when vomiting ends and the child can hold down food.
ANTIBIOTICS
Students who take antibiotics for impetigo, strep throat, and several other bacterial infections should be on them for 12 hours before returning to school. If you are not sure, ask your school nurse or your child’s primary care provider.
At Bay Park Elementary, we believe in a culture of yes, putting students at the center of all we do, and working as a team to provide a high-quality education for every student. Your feedback is a vital part of this process!

Our principal and administrative support team, together with the Site Governance Team, will thoughtfully review responses. Thank you for helping us grow and celebrating everything that makes Bay Park Elementary such a special place to learn and work!
Whether you can volunteer as little as 25 minutes a day once a week or more frequently, your involvement will strengthen our Bay Park Elementary family and make a meaningful difference for our students. If you are planning on chaperoning a field trip you need to be a cleared volunteer in order to do so. Every year you are required to fill out the volunteer packet, you will also need to have TB clearance. TB clearance is good for 4 years. If you have not been cleared as a volunteer for this school year, we ask that all volunteer packets are turned in by January 31. We cannon clear volunteers the day of field trips. You can pick up a volunteer packet from the office.
Dear Bay Park Families,
At Bay Park Elementary we strive to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all students. To help us maintain this, we kindly remind families to follow the proper protocols when addressing concerns about student behavior.
If you have concerns about another child's behavior-whether it occurred during school hours or outside of school-we ask that you refrain from addressing the child directly. Instead, please bring your concerns to your child's teacher, Principal Wood, or our school counselor, Darlene Kanzler. This approach ensures that all concerns are handled respectfully, thoughtfully, and in a way that aligns with district policies.
As a reminder, per San Diego Unified School District policy, all visitors must report to the school office and comply with district rules while on school grounds. Our priority is maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for every student (In re Joseph F. (2000) 85 Cal.app.4th975).
Thank you for partnering with us to support a positive and respectful school community. If you have any questions or need support, please don't hesitate to reach out to a staff member.
Sincerely,
Bay Park Elementary Staff
Every family should have parent portal access for their students. At the elementary school level, it can be used for updating school forms, checking attendance, viewing report cards, and monitoring test scores (grades 3-5). Once you sign up, your access will remain active for the duration of your child's time with SDUSD. Parent Portal becomes particularly valuable in middle and high school for tracking your student's progress.
If you do not have an access ID or password to sign up, don't worry. All access IDs and passwords will be distributed on Back to School Night for those who need to gain access.
To ensure the safety and well-being of all our students, we kindly ask for your attention to the following reminders regarding pick-up, drop-off, and general safety before and after school:
Timely Pick-Up:
Dismissal times are 3:35 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 1:00 PM on Wednesdays. We kindly ask that children are picked up on time to ensure they feel safe and supported. Please note that Thursday, October 31, 2024, is a minimum day with a 1:00 PM dismissal, so we encourage you to plan accordingly. We appreciate your help in making sure all students are picked up promptly!
Arrival and Dismissal Safety:
Encourage your child to walk with friends or trusted adults.
Remind your child to avoid talking to strangers and to report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult immediately.
Please follow all traffic safety rules when driving near the school, including refraining from double parking or blocking crosswalks to keep our walking students safe.
Community Safety:
Review "stranger danger" tips with your children, reminding them never to go anywhere with someone they do not know.
Encourage your child to go directly home or to their designated pick-up area after school and stay on familiar walking paths.
We appreciate your ongoing support in helping keep our students safe during these important times of the day. Thank you for your cooperation!
In our continued effort to support all members of our community, we kindly remind everyone to reserve the disabled parking spaces for those with a valid placard that belongs to them. Please avoid using these spaces as a loading zone or parking with a placard that does not belong to you. Let’s work together to ensure these spots remain accessible for those who truly need them. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in keeping our school welcoming and inclusive for everyone!
Dear Bay Park Families,
As part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students, particularly those with special needs, we kindly ask for your cooperation regarding the use of entrances on our campus.
The door located on Jellett Street, at the cross street to Denver Avenue, is designated as a disabled access point specifically for students in our Visual Impairment (VI) Program. We have dedicated staff present at this entrance to supervise and support these students and their families, especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, ensuring they can safely cross the street and access campus.
Please note that these staff members are only responsible for supervising the students in the VI Program. They are not available to monitor traffic or supervise other students attempting to enter or exit the campus through this door. We kindly ask parents and students not enrolled in the VI Program to refrain from using this door and instead use the following entrances:
• Gate A on Denver Street
• Gate H on Denver Street
• The Erie Street gate
Let’s work together to ensure that all students have safe passage to and from school. We need your support in respecting the designated disabled access point and maintaining the focus on student safety.
Additionally, any inappropriate behavior, including threats or derogatory comments directed toward our staff, will not be tolerated. We ask that all members of our community treat staff with respect as we work to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.
We are so proud of the kindness and cooperation that makes Bay Park Elementary such a special place. Let’s continue to lift each other up, showing respect for the roles that each of us plays in keeping our school community safe, positive, and strong.
Thank you for being an essential part of the Bay Park Tribe! Together, we are making this an incredible place for every student, every day.
In partnership,
Melissa Wood, Principal
In the interest of ensuring the safety of our students, all students in after school activities will dismiss exclusively through Gate A. This gate is conveniently located just outside the front office. To keep the campus secure all gates will close once all students have left campus. Once the program is over students will be walked to Gate A for dismissal.
As a reminder, due to student allergies, student dietary restrictions and to follow district policy, we do not allow food/treats to be brought in for the students to the classroom. You are always welcome to bring little items such as stickers, fun pencils, etc. for the students in your child’s classroom.
For the safety of our students please note the following guidelines:
Do not double park on Denver Street and drop your student off in front of A or B gates
Do not pick or drop off your student at the stop signs
Be respectful of the Disabled Zones and do not use these unless you have a permit
Be respectful and do not park in front of the local resident’s driveways
Bay Park Elementary has a 3-minute drop off and pick-up zone on Erie Street that is monitored by both the school’s 5th Grade Safety Patrol and BPE School’s Staff.
If you are planning a family trip during the school year, or other situations for which your student will miss 3 to 14 days, it is the parent/guardian/student's responsibility to request an ISC from the Front Office. This must be done 10 working days prior to the student's leaving date. Work must be satisfactorily returned and signed off before the absence is marked "excused". Regular attendance is a direct factor in strong student achievement.
The following steps describe the standard operating procedure for handling ISC:
1. Contact the school office to receive an ISC at least 10 working days (M-F) days prior to absence. You may contact the office via email, phone or office visit. Email: mnathir@sandi.net
2. Parent will fill out and sign the contract
3. Teacher provides classroom work that will be missed
4. Student will turn in completed work to teacher upon their return
5. Teacher will review the work and mark as complete giving the student attendance credit or they will mark incomplete/not returned and attendance credit will not be given
6. There will be NO approved contracts the first 6 weeks or the last 6 weeks of school.
7. School Administration can deny ISC if they deem them not to be with in the ISC guidelines.
