Independent Study
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Independent Study Enrollment?
Program offered to eligible full time San Diego Unified 6-12 grade students who would like a self-paced independent school option. Students must be recommended by their counselor or admin and must have a meeting with their counselor before applying.
Who is a good candidate?
Students who are typically self-motivated, self-directed, and able to manage their time independently are successful in following the pacing calendar for
completing their courses on schedule.
What does the program entail?
Independent study is a self-paced learning program through Edgenuity and/or Canvas either on a quarter system or semester system. Middle school students take courses on a semester system. High school students take courses on a quarter system. Middle school students meet daily with a learning coach that includes academic and social emotional check ins. High school students meet once a week with a learning coach for academic check ins. Attendance is taken for work completed and learning coach check ins.
Can a student with special needs enroll?
Yes, when it is appropriate for the student. An IEP meeting should be held with an administrator representing Online Learning or a teacher on site that works in the online program to determine whether the program is an appropriate option for the student. Once enrolled, the student’s IEP or 504 accommodations will be addressed in the course where appropriate.
What does their schedule look like?
Students take 3-4 courses in a quarter or semester. Each course requires 1-2 hours a day totaling to 3-4 hours students are spending working on all their classes.
Coursework on average is 90-100 hours of instructional time. If students stay on track with course progress, daily time spent on courses reduces.
Are these courses approved by the NCAA?
First Time credit A-G courses are approved by the NCAA. Credit Recovery courses are not approved. If a student athlete needs to make up a course to
continue to be NCAA eligible, they will have to enroll in a First Time course and not the Credit Recovery version.
Can students continue to work in the program at home and on the weekends?
Yes. Students can work on all coursework at home, except for timed tests and exams that need to be unlocked and proctored by the teacher at the school site.
What supports are available?
Tutoring, check ins, counseling support, night school and Saturday school is available. Each learning coach and teacher of record have their own zoom or phone office hours and tutoring schedules.
Who is the contact to discuss a student’s progress in the course?
In monitoring student progress, both their Learning Coach teacher and their teacher of record are the best resources for how the student is progressing. Sometimes these teachers are the same. In addition, the online learning counselor is another resource.
Is there a way parents can monitor student progress?
Parents can be given access to an Edgenuity Parent Portal to monitor their student’s progress. The student’s Online Lab teacher or counselor can set up the
access. Weekly emails are sent to parents showing student progress and grades.
Dual Enrollment
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Online Dual Enrollment:
Program offered to eligible full time San Diego Unified 9-12 grade students who need to recover credit for a class or require a first time course for graduation. Students must be recommended by their counselor and must enroll in an Online Lab either before school, after school, or during their regular school day on their campus.
Who is a good candidate?
Students who are typically self-motivated, self-directed, and able to manage their time independently are successful in following the pacing calendar for
completing their courses on schedule.
Can a student with special needs enroll?
Yes, when it is appropriate for the student. An IEP meeting should be held with an administrator representing Online Learning or a teacher on site that works in the dual enrollment program to determine whether the program is an appropriate option for the student. Once enrolled, the student’s IEP or 504 accommodations will be addressed in the course where appropriate.
What if a student finishes a course before the end of the semester or quarter? Can they enroll in another course?
Yes. Once a student finishes a course, and the teacher of record finalizes their grade, the student will be dropped from that course and enrolled in the next course
requested by the counselor (as long as the course is completed before the enrollment deadline). It is recommended that students plan for no more than 1 credit recovery course per quarter. Coursework on average is 60 hours of instructional time.
How many courses can a student be enrolled in? Can they enroll in multiple courses at once?
Students can only take one online class at a time. When they finish the course, they can be enrolled in a new course.
Are these courses approved by the NCAA?

continue to be NCAA eligible, they will have to enroll in a First Time course and not the Credit Recovery version.
