Counseling
The San Diego Unified School District's Counseling and Guidance Program supports teaching and learning by assuring that all students achieve academic success and develop life skills through the acquisition of academic, career, and personal/social competencies, which will prepare them for meaningful participation in a diverse, changing world.
School counselors will:
Design and implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs and the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) National Model
Ensure that students will receive guidance curriculum in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development. Provide intervention services for students experiencing academic and personal/social barriers to learning. Provide guidance and information to students and families to ensure success in student attendance, behavior, and graduation, and prevention of drug use and violence.
Provide resources to staff to ensure that each school counseling center is a family-friendly environment.
Ensure that students have access to a safe school climate necessary for academic and social/emotional growth.

Who is a good candidate?
Students who are typically self-motivated, self-directed, and able to manage their time independently are successful in following the pacing calendar for completing their courses on schedule.
Can a student with special needs enroll?
Yes, when it is appropriate for the student. An IEP meeting should be held with an administrator representing online learning or a teacher on site that works in the dual enrollment program to determine whether the program is an appropriate option for the student. If so the student’s IEP or 504 accommodations will be addressed in the course where appropriate.
Can a student needing only partial credit enroll?
No, Online Edgenuity course are all set to a full credit curriculum and can't be modified.
What counseling services are offered via online school?
Counselors offer the same supports as if your child was at an in person school, but all services are delivered through Zoom or other online means. Counselors offer academic, college/career, and social/emotional support. You can set up an appointment by filling out the online counselor request form. Can the counselor help with college application & planning?
Yes, parents or students can fill out the counselor request form to make an appointment to meet with the counselor. Please see the college/career section on the counseling services page for access to planning resources and information.
