WELCOME BACK! SDUSD's Newcomer Welcome Centers are spaces where students and families who recently immigrated to the U.S can learn about the district's resources, programs, and opportunities while sharing their unique backgrounds, cultures, and aspirations. We are located at Hoover High, San Diego High, Mira Mesa High, Lincoln High, and Crawford High and are also available to travel to different schools across the district to support families. Please contact us at welcome@sandi.net or 619-366-5770 with any questions.
Our services are specifically designed to assist immigrant and refugee families as they adjust to life in the U.S. We offer a range of support, including:
Essential Supplies: School supplies, hygiene kits, shoes, and bus passes
Educational Guidance: Orientation to U.S. education, academic counseling, ESL classes for parents, and mental health resources
Technology Access: Hotspots for internet connectivity, navigating online platforms for school
Community Connections: Referrals to organizations providing housing, jobs, healthcare, legal advice, and food assistance
Language Support: Translation and interpretation services are available to ensure effective communication
Apply for SUN Bucks Summer Food Benefits
Posted on 05/15/2026
Families may be eligible to receive $120 per child through SUN Bucks, California’s summer nutrition program that helps families buy food while school is out. SUN Bucks can be used at grocery stores, farmers markets and other authorized retailers. Receiving SUN Bucks does not affect immigration status, and children who receive SUN Bucks can still participate in CalFresh and summer meal programs.
Some students will be automatically enrolled if they receive CalFresh, CalWORKs, or eligible Medi-Cal benefits, or if they are identified as foster, homeless, migrant or runaway. If your child is not automatically enrolled, you must apply to receive SUN Bucks — even if your child already receives free school meals.
In San Diego Unified, families can apply by completing the Universal Benefits Application through the PowerSchool Parent Portal by August 31, 2026.
Apply here: https://powerschool.sandi.net/public/
Watch a video tutorial: Submitting Sun Bucks - Parent Portal
SUN Bucks cards will begin arriving by mail as early as June 2026. Families should make sure their mailing address is up to date with their school and/or county social services office. Once funds are loaded, families have 122 days to use them before they expire.
Students who are turning 3 years old by December 1, 2026 may apply for the part-day preschool at 17 sites, or the extended-day program at Central Elementary.
If your student turns 3 years old after December 1, 2026, please apply at the time the student turns 3 years old.
Students who turn 4 years old by September 1, 2026 may participate in Transitional Kindergarten (TK)
Students who turn 4 years old after September 1, 2026 year may participate in a part-day preschool or extended-day preschool.
To register, you will be asked to create an account, input your child's information, and upload documents, including birth certificates, pay stubs, postmarked mail, vaccine records, etc. Application open May 15, 2026
