CLASS DOJO: All communication is through Class Dojo. Please be sure to join my class. Check regularly for announcements.
PARENT CONTACT FORM- please fill out the parent contact form and update any new phone numbers or addresses to the office.
GOOGLE CLASSROOM SUMMARIES: An invitation will be sent to your email to receive summaries from Google classroom. This and checking the homework sheet is the best way to monitor your child's progress during the year. Mid-cycle progress reports do not go home in Elementary School.
Volunteering: If you would like to come in and help, please do! Coordinate with me so you're not here during PE or lunch (etc)
Computers are an important part of how we teach and learn, however the expectation of using a computer is for educational purposes only. Students are not allowed to download or play games not approved by the teacher on their computer.
The computer is to extend the learning from school to home. Students who are not responsible enough to complete computer assignments at home, may have to keep their computer at school.
Students are expected to keep their computers charged at home. There are no extra chargers at school. If you would like to purchase an extra charger for school or home, you can buy this one on Amazon. Chromebook Charger
Reading log: students have to read for 20-30 min/night and respond on a reading log. Reading logs are due Mondays.
Reading logs can not be made up because you can not go back on Wednesday and read for Tuesday. Please be diligent about reading every night.
Homework collection and grading: All homework should stay in the homework folder at all times.
A homework sheet is given out once a week and all homework for that week is written down . Students have the weekend to finish any incomplete assignments from the homework sheet. The entire packet is due Monday. Students get one homework grade--out of 10 each week, 2 points for complete and on time assignments. 1 point for incomplete, grossly incorrect or late assignments. Assignments that are less than half completed will receive no credit (NC) but can be made up before the grading day. Any students using Google or other similar sources to complete homework will receive No Credit. Students will have to make up the work, but will not receive credit. Grades are recorded on Google Classroom where you can view if you have signed up for Google Classroom Summaries.
General assignments: If an assignment is given for homework, it is due the following day, unless otherwise specified. Late homework is accepted but may not necessarily receive credit or may receive partial credit. Homework may also be given on the computer and will count for a grade. Please sign HW sheets. My goal for homework is not to give so much that it interferes with your family time. However, students also have to learn the responsibility of receiving an assignment, completing it and turning it in when it's due and they need to develop good study habits for high school and college.
Grades are given 3 times a year-- in November, right before Thanksgiving; in March, right before Spring Break; and the last day of the school year.
4-Advanced 3-Proficient (At grade level) 2-Near grade level 1-Well below grade level
Because the report card is Standard Based, percent scores on tests do not match proficiency levels on the report card
A loose correlation would be: 4 (85-100) 3 (68-84) 2 (67-55) 1 (less than 55)
Although in the classroom, students may get more credit if they miss the problem for a small computation error, but can show they understand the process, this may not be so on the state test.
View Report Cards through Power School. Tutorial on how to access grades is at the bottom of the sign in.

Absences: When returning from an absence, the work missed will be waiting for you in your cubbie Any homework given should be made up as soon as possible. You do not have to complete the classwork unless you want to, but you are responsible for all information missed. If the assignment is not in the cubbie, see Mrs. Oliver immediately.
Parent meeting or conference: If you are a parent and would like to meet with Mrs. Oliver for any reason, please Dojo me or send a note to school to schedule an appointment after school. kmorris1@sandi.net
Parties: In keeping with San Diego Unified's Wellness Policy, birthday parties for students that include cake, soda or other sweets are prohibited and healthier options are encouraged. Healthy choices can be found on the district's smart snack list. Not all treats have to be food! Please do not bring cupcakes or soda of any kind. High sugar treats will be returned to the office.
Field Trips: Field Trips are not optional. They are an alternate learning experience for students and are considered school. Students who miss school for not wanting to go on the field trip will receive an unexcused absence. Students, however, might not be allowed to participate in a field trip if their behavior is deemed unsafe. In some instances, the student may attend if the parent attends, but safety on a field trip is paramount. If a student poses a safety concern for the rest of the class, they will have to stay at school in another teacher's class.
Volunteering for field trip: If you would like to go with us on a field trip you must fill out a volunteer form in the office and have a TB clearance before attending the trip. If you were born in the US, the School Nurse can fill out the form for you. If you were not born in the US, you will have to get the clearance from your doctor.
Cell Phones: Students are not allowed to use their cell phone during the school day at all. Cell phones will be collected and put in a locked box for the duration of the day. If you need to contact your child, please call the office. If your child wants to contact you, they will do so through the office. Do not attempt to contact your child via their cell phone during school hours. If a student is caught using their cell phone during the school day, it may be confiscated and sent to the office where a parent will have to come and pick it up.
