Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the Symphonic Band at Muirlands Middle School. This ensemble hits the ground running at the beginning of each school year. It is expected that students in this ensemble will have a strong grasp of their instrument and be able to read music notation. Below, you will see the required audition material. Wind musicians are required to perform the listed Major Scales, a prepared piece, and complete a sight-reading piece, which I will provide. Percussionists are required to perform the Major scales on xylophone or bells, the listed percussion rudiments, a prepared solo, and a sight-reading piece, which I will provide.

• Scales for Winds and Percussion

  • Concert Bb (B flat) Major - One Octave

  • Concert Eb  (E flat) Major - One Octave

  • Concert F Major - One Octave

  • Chromatic Scale from Bb to higher Bb - One Octave

  • Percussion Rudiments - Single Stroke Roll, Multiple Bounce Roll (Buzz), Flams, Paradiddles, Flam Accents, Flam Tap

• Prepared solo

  • This can be anything you have been working on that demonstrates your skill set as a musician

• Sight Reading

  • You will be given a piece of music that you have never seen before. Your goal is to perform the piece to the best of your ability.
