Transitional Housing Redesign of a Commercial Structure
Students will learn about commercial architecture then design transitional housing for a selected group that is prone to experiencing homelessness (i.e. veterans, single mothers, those transitioning from incarceration, runaway teens). Attention will be paid to the specific needs of the group chosen, and include personalized living that address those needs. Students will complete interviews and research regarding the specific needs of their chosen group, then redesign a commercial structure to provide transitional living with these specifications and needs in mind.
Students will explore design strategies for transitional housing for their selected group. Thoughtful design will dignify their clients by meeting their needs for self-determination, security, and connection. The goal will be to create welcoming, accessible environments that help to empower the people in need.
