LAFAYETTE IMPLEMENTATION DOCUMENT
Lafayette will continue to work transparently in all aspects of our Community Schools work. Below is our attached goals and actionable next steps that are mandated by the CCSPP as we move into our year 3 initiatives!
Lafayette Elementary School is located in Clairemont. Opened in 1966, our school was designed and built for general education students and the District's DHH program.
Students range from 18 months old to 5th graders. Our location allows convenient access to Olive Grove Community Park, local library and fire station and other community resources that support learning. The campus is well maintained by the District, and our community takes pride in the school’s appearance.
We provide a rigorous, standards-based instructional program, responsive to individual learning styles. To meet the needs of our very diverse population, we offer special day classes for DHH students, "push-in" support for students who receive Special Education services in a general education setting and specially designed academic instruction for English Learners. GATE is offered to all qualified general and special education students.
In June 2014, the Lafayette School Community collaborated with Rob Tobin and A Reason to Survive (ARTS) to install a 60 foot mural in honor of Yusra Nasir, a beloved student who passed away in the Summer of 2013. Yusra was profoundly Deaf and lost her sight at an early age. Throughout her short life, she was an avid learner and communicator. Yusra inspired all of us at Lafayette. This is the year she would have promoted to seventh grade, so at the sixth grade promotion ceremony on June 13, 2014 we will dedicate this beautiful mural in her memory. This tactile mural includes inspirational words by Helen Keller, which can be read in Braille by the visually impaired. We believe that Yusra would have felt the beauty of this mural with her heart. Yusra's Legacy will live on at Lafayette Elementary School for generations to come.
