The chapter invites you to an exciting mentoring program for the 2024-25 school year. The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., San Diego Alumnae Chapter, are opening our arms and hearts to welcome young ladies who are interested in joining the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta G.E.M.S. (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) Institute.
An exciting year has been planned for you. The Delta G.E.M.S. program is designed to catch the dreams of African American females between the ages (14-18) and in grades (9-12). Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams by performing specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
To instill the need to excel academically;
To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond, and
To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
The Delta GEMS program offers a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS participants have the chance to define and “Discover their individual Brilliance.”
The application deadline is September 20, 2024, 5 p.m. Please complete the online application using this student application link and the parental/guardian forms using this link to keahagan68@att.net. If you have questions or concerns, please get in touch with Kea Hagan, Chair (619) 994-6421.

The Youth Mental Health Academy aims to allow high school students to participate in a community-based career development program and gain knowledge in mental health-related fields. This career development program is designed to give students hands-on experience in a professional work environment, help them develop new skills, and expose them to potential career paths. This program is at NO COST to students; however, YMHA will compensate students for completing the program.
The academy runs for five weeks during the first summer, June – July 2025, regularly throughout the school year, and for up to six weeks during the second summer, June – July 2026. The academy concludes with internships in the summer of 2026.
Students will receive:
First summer: Paid project-based learning around mental health careers and issues and an opportunity to complete a capstone presentation (with a stipend of up to $2,000).
Academic year programming: College planning workshops and other community-building activities.
Second summer: A paid internship in a mental health-related field.
Duration of program: Mentorship from an early-career professional or a college or graduate student pursuing a health-related career. Youth Mental Health Academy team members are with you every step of the way.

SHOUT OUTS
A new Communication banner was added to our field for some students to use during PE. There are many ways that we all communicate, and some students at Hoover use pictures, either on a tablet or paper, in order to talk to their teachers and each other. This new banner provides more opportunity to communicate, even if a student doesn't have their tablet with them. All students deserve meaningful interactions. We celebrate new opportunities like this so that every Hoover Cardinal can thrive as collaborative communicators!
On Friday the Hoover Girls Flag Football team and Varsity Boys Football team celebrated their annual Staff Appreciation game. Shout-out to all of our student athletes! And thank you to all the staff who attended the game!
