The Needs and Assets Assessment completed by Fay Elementary staff serves to identify the specific needs of our community and the available resources to address them. This valuable data enables our staff to tailor their programs effectively, align their efforts with community needs, and maximize their positive impact.
The data shows that increased collaboration and teamwork received the highest percentage of positive feedback at 23.61%, indicating a strong recognition of teamwork within the school community. Student engagement and attendance, as well as events and programs, also received significant percentages. However, challenges and improvements needed also garnered 12.5% of the responses, suggesting areas that require attention and enhancement. Moving forward, creating working groups with educational partners to address these areas will be crucial for further improvement at Fay.
It seems that the front office and hallways are the areas that most people feel are well-maintained and clean, with 68.5% and 37% of respondents indicating so, respectively. The upstairs bathroom and field also received relatively high percentages, with 33.3% and 42.6% of respondents feeling that they are well-maintained and clean. On the other hand, areas like the classroom, MPR, and lunch arbor received lower percentages, indicating that improvements in maintenance and cleanliness may be necessary. It is clear that there are areas for improvement, and the leadership team will work to find possible options to address these concerns moving forward.
The survey data highlights the top three areas needing improvement: behavior plans (70.4%), leadership and collaboration (50%), and school-wide communications (48.1%). The need for better behavior plans suggests current strategies are insufficient in managing disruptive students. Concerns about leadership and collaboration indicate a need for more effective leadership practices and a more inclusive decision-making process. Issues with school-wide communications point to a need for clearer and more efficient communication protocols.
Further context from the survey elaborations reveals that behavior management (37.04%) is a significant issue, likely affecting the learning environment. Leadership (14.81%) and collaboration infrastructure (20.37%) concerns suggest staff may feel unsupported, impacting team effectiveness. Communication (31.48%) issues highlight the need for better information sharing, and lunch and recess supervision (24.07%) concerns point to potential safety and organizational problems.
To address these challenges, we will focus on forming work groups with staff, parents, and community partners to help develop and implement solutions, creating a more supportive and effective learning environment at Fay Elementary School.
Based on data from teachers' experiences in the classroom, the top three barriers affecting student learning are language barriers (75.9%), lack of parental involvement (74.1%), and learning disabilities (74.1%). The high percentage of language barriers and lack of parental involvement suggests that many students face challenges in effectively communicating and receiving support from their families. Additionally, the prevalence of learning disabilities indicates that a considerable portion of students may require additional support and accommodations to address their specific learning needs.
To increase student engagement, teachers identified several effective strategies based on their classroom experiences. The most recommended approach is hands-on learning (74.1%), which emphasizes active participation and experiential learning. Real-world connections (68.5%) and positive behavior systems (70.4%) are also highly valued, suggesting that making learning relevant to students' lives and fostering a supportive environment are key. Differentiated instruction (61.1%) is important for addressing diverse learning needs, while active learning (46.3%) encourages student involvement and critical thinking. Additionally, incorporating technology (33.3%) and gamification (33.3%) can make learning more interactive and enjoyable, further boosting engagement.
