Reconnecting with Nature through the Creation of Digital Games

The Gamers4Nature project (University of Aveiro, Portugal and Bioliving Association) aims to develop and implement strategies capable of encouraging the active participation of young audiences (secondary and higher education students) in the creation of games for mobile devices, as a way to promote a change in behavior and awareness of the environment, promoting knowledge about environmental conservation and biodiversity.
Sancta Maria College joined with three other secondary schools:

First Teaching, Learning and Training Activity (LT&TA) - Introducing G4N Toolkit to Teaching Staff

Second LT&TA - Follow-up G4N toolkit cards set produced by teaching staff took place between 6 and 10 September 2021, in Bragança, Portugal.

Portuguese school in Bragança was the host, and the Aveiro
University and BioLiving teams led the activity.
This in-person activity was where the four partner schools met
face-to-face for the first time.
Student Project - 21st September 2021
TY students accompanied by teachers (Noel McGreal, Judi O’Malley and John Paul Tiernan) - visit a local beach (Carrowmore) to conduct an ecology (Flora and Fauna) study, identify coastal erosion and other issues e.g. pollution.
Students completed a presentation which will be used as the criteria for choosing the students who would go to Portugal at the end of October.

Third LT&TA - Using G4N Toolkit by students will take place 24th - 31st October (Midterm)

This was an in-person activity that was held in Aveiro (University of Aveiro and BioLiving as host) with 2 teachers (Noel McGreal and Judi O'Malley) and 6 students (Joey Martin, Meadbh Ní Shuilleabhain, Tim Carty, Leah Coffey, Ryan Mulchrone and Alisha Herterich) from each school.

November 2021 - April 2022
All TY students are working on game design and development during this time.
The 6 students acted as Ambassadors for the programme in the school.
Time is given for Science and Coding class to help with this.
Teachers had numerous activities such as proof reading thematic cards and posters from translation to English and designing posters
Our students entered a competion organised by Léargas (National Agency) and the school came in Second Place Nationally

3 Students and 3 Teachers went to Baza - the best game 'Emerald Isle' was chosen to represent the school

30th - 31st May 2022 - 'Game Jam'
6th Class pupils from Louisburgh National School were invited to Sancta Maria College to take part in a 'Game Jam' where they had to design and create a game over a few days. The pupils created games on the biodiversity theme of 'Coastal' - focusing on local flora and fauna along with coastal issues such as pollution, flooding and climate change.
