This week's assignment aims to design a pen holder in fusion 360, and preparing it for 3d printing.
For inspiration I searched online until I found something I liked.
For 3D modelling I used Fusion 360.
To prepare the file for 3D printing, I used Ultimaker Cura.
First I draw a circle, then made an offset plan and drew another circle on it and lofted the 2 cirlces, after that I made a shell with 1 mm thickness.
After that, I made a sketch on the top circle and offset it with 1 mm which is the thickness of the cylinder, after that I extruded that profile up to make the cylinder.
I made an offset plan from the original XZ plan to sketch other details on it.
On the offset plan I made a sketch where I drew a slot and made an offset to the inside, and copied the outer slot down along the Z axis.
After that I extruded the selected profile and made extent type To object and the operation to join.
To make the surface that the eyes will start from, I extruded the inner profile of the slot and made the start to Offset with 2.5 mm and the distance (thickness) 1 mm.
After that I made and extrude cut to the slot in the bottom.
For the eyes I drew a half circle on the recently created surface and revolved it 180 degree.
After that I mirrored the eyes along the original ZY plane and made some nice fillets to smoothen hard edges.
I made a press pull with 2 mm to the base to give it some strength as it is the surface which carries pens.
Finally it is time to add plastic material and nice color.
After exporting the file as STL from fusion 360, I imported it in CURA and adjusted the infill to 20% (I noticed that even making the infill 100% nothing changes because the thickness is too small (1mm).
The profile is set to 0.2 to give it nice finish with suitable machining time.
I checked for the supports and found everything is fine.
The next step is to take the design and G-code to the 3D printer, using SD card.
After selecting the material and preparing the machine, printing starts Layer after layer.
After the first iteration I found the pen holder too small, so I started to use a ruler to determine the minimal right dimensions which can hold pens without the need to very long machining time.
Something that helps me with designing from reference is PureRef, a free tool that keeps the reference in small window besides you to keep you focused on design process instead of hitting (ALT+TAB) all the time.
You can download it from here. To download it for free, just select custom amount and type 0.
