This week's assignment aims to design a mobile holder in fusion 360, which could be fabricated using laser cutting machine.
For inspiration I searched online until I found smething interesting.
I used Fusion 360, which is CAD software to create the 3D model and the 2D sketches.
LaserWorks is used to prepare the files to laser machine.
For sketching the elephant I used reference photo as canvas, and matched the curves using the 3-point curve tool, then I made all curves tangent to each other. For the legs I used lines and fillets, then mirrored the left leg to the right.
I gave dimensions to all curves and lines, and also other sketch constrains to make the sketch fully defined.
For the connector part it was easier as it is all straight lines. T-slot also consists of straight lines, one thing in common that I modelled only half of the shape and mirrored it.
after finishing the sketches, I extruded them to the thickness of 3mm and made them components for assembly.
for the assembly I assembled them by means of the tabs which was straight forward.
To prepare the files for Laser cutting. I combined the two sketches into one sketch and deleted all the construction lines leaving only the lines to be cut, this made it easier for Laserworks to deal with.
All the lines are to be cut throughly with speed of 30 m/s and power of 65%.
A mistake I did that I didn't calculate the horizontal distance, which is the width of the mobile (in case it is lying vertically). So I downloaded my mobilephone 3D model from grabcad and put it into the assembly to give the right dimensions.
Some thing that helps me a lot is using reference images as canvas this helps me to find a reference to work with.
First hit insert>canvas
After that we select the image under the canvases section and right click selecting calibrate to select two points and giving a distance between them to calibrate the image to tha actual dimensions
