My Mother is a fan of elephants so i decided to make the pencil holder in the shape of elephant .
This week’s assignment was to design a pen and pencil holder that may rest on a flat surface.
I chose an elephant pencil holder with a phone holder, the idea came to me by searching Google then I found a real product on Amazon
I mimicked it with some adjustments to the dimensions to hold my phone inn both portrait & landscape orientations.
Software
Fusion 360 for Modeling
RDWorks V8 for Laser cut Preparation in my LapTop
LaserWork V6 for Laser cut Preparation at Fab-Lab
Materials
Laser Cut
Attach the Parts together
First: The Laser Cut Part
Elephant Holder
Decide what are the compartments that I want (Pen holder -Mobile holder).
Then search for dimensions.
3. Draw my design in an external paper define the mean dimensions.
4. Start drawing the base using Fusion 360. Define the shapes and lines
5. Extrude the shape and fillet the edges.
6.start drawing the far side part with several taps and T slots Another fully defined sketch ;) , then copy and past new for the front side parts as well .
7. Start to draw the middle part , but it will shorter by 2 ml so it can rest easily in the middle part of
8.Start to draw the elephant part to be fully defined and project the t slots on the elephant side and then copy new paste
Fully Assembled Model
10. Importing the file and adjusting it. then make sure that all parameters off cut, are ok, Simulate the draw, save as dxf
Saved the file and created a new component for each face.
Designed the base/ground face as a rectangle from the origin, fully defined.
Added t-slots to fit on all faces, extruded 3mm.
Designed the right side on the plane of the corresponding slot, created a 3*3mm hole for the screw, added two tabs for the front face, extruded to 3mm.
Designed the mid-side with a t-slot to attach to the ground side, added two tabs for the front face, extruded to 3mm.
Designed the left side identical to the right side.
Drew the front side (Elephant shape) using an arc, defined lines, settled all fitting projects.
Copied the front side for the back side.
Fully defined all faces, except for the locked splines in the front and back faces.
Assembled all faces using joints and selected a suitable appearance.
Exported .dxf files using the "Export to DXF" extension.
All .dxf files were imported & nested
Only cut mode was used with a power of 30& speed of 55
The final file was saved in .rld format
Laser Cut Fabrication
I went to Fab Lab Maadi at the which is assigned time.
I opened the (.rld) file on LaserWork software on the PC to make sure the parameters ok.
I turned on the machine.
I Place the PLY 3mm wood sheet.
I downloaded the file from the PC to the machine.
Insert it into the machine by the (file) and then (enter) Buttons.
I move the nozzle to the beginning of the wood sheet by (+) Button.
I set the origin point by the (origin) Button.
I tested the frame by the (Frame) Button.
Finally, I start the machine with the (start) Button).
The cutting process takes 4 min.
Now, all parts are ready to assemble using 3 mm screws and nuts.
my first challenge was projecting correctly on the elephant sides and copy paste new.
I solved by first asking my instructor but then i started to try several sketches till i got it right and now i understand how to do it
second challenge was that i created my elephant too big, i asked abdelrahman lab fab specialist and he told me to print it on two separate sheets and it worked out at the end.
it helped implement all what i learned all the impervious weeks in a big project , i actually have confidence in making my own project
