To design anything has been designed and made before, you must first search on the Internet for the latest designs, On the one hand, you provide visual feedback, and on the other hand, you make sure that you will not make an old or unuseful design.
I searched several times and found some wonderful shapes from which I derived my design and started drawing the idea on the paper as you can see
Surely, from your look at the paper, you conclude that I would have been a bad artist
I used Fusion 360 to design the pen holder and the angle bracket with captive nut
I Use RDworks to set my machining settings for the laser cut machine such as (Power, Speed ) and set the suitable mode for each process (Cut, Scan and dot)
also to draw eagle's neck feathers
I use the Ultramaker Cura software to edit my 3D Model properties such as (Scale, Resolution and infill ) my model for this week is the angle bracket with captive nut
I used it to print the angle bracket with captive nut
i used it to cut the pen holder
I used El Malky laser Cutter Machine to cut the pen holder components from the wood sheet
I used prusa i3 to the angle using yellow PLA material
Pen Holder Design Process
Before starting to draw, I designated a specific area on my desk to put the pen holder
The dimensions of that space I determined by looking, then I measured this distance with a ruler, and on this basis I determined the dimensions of the base
"I didn't draw the tapas at first, I drew them later
After drawing the upper parts of the pen holder"
I divided the base into two parts, a part for placing pens and a part for placing small things that are usually on my desk
This part is the back of the rack
I wanted there to be three shelves in this part, so you will find that the diameter of the circle is rather large
This is the front part of the rack, It comes in the shape of a moon
I drew a circle with the same diameter as the back of the circle, then I drew an arc between two points on the circle to show the shape of the crescent
Here I started drawing the shelf
To determine its dimensions, I wanted the edges of the shelf to be within the boundaries of the circle, so I made its length less than the diameter of the circle, and its width would be the distance between the front and back circle (the crescent).
"I swept the shelf after the design two more times to mount them on the circles"
We come to the second part of the design, which is the design of the pen holder. I wanted this part to be unusual. I searched on the Internet for some unique pen holders. I found very cool things, but most of them needed to be thicker than the available wood (3 mm). After that, I found that picture, which is in the form of a soldier, and I thought that the shield that the soldier holds in his hand should be the position of the pens. I started drawing on the picture until the soldier appeared with me like this, After I finished drawing, I found that the dimensions were very small. I didn't know how to make it bigger than that.
"Engineer Menna(My Instructor) helped me to do it without deformating the drawing, She told me how to make the dimensions larger. You will find the method in the challenges part"
We come to the last part of the design and the shield or the placement of the pens themselves, I searched for forms of shields on the Internet and found that these are the best for me, I did the same steps for the soldier until the shape of the shield appeared, It was also small in size, and I enlarged it using the Sketch Scale tool
1.Ultramaker Cura Process
1- After importing the bracket and duplicate because I need two of them I make sure that all bracket bottom touches the bed
2- Set 0.2mm Resolution
and 20% Infill
3- Slicing
Slicing Results
2.RDworks Process
For laser cutting the process was as follows:
first, I imported the sketches and the Cosmetic figures (Starts, Sun, Planet) and placed them on the outer face of the moon
Secondly, checked the scale on the laser works program before downloading the file to the machine
Fixing the wood board on the machine
Set the origin point
Tracking the frame
Run
For 3D Printing the process was as follows:
first, I chose the color I was looking for brown color would be better I didn't find it
then checked on the ultracura software if all the design bottoms touching the bed or I need to put supports
Set the temperature to 215
put the file on the microcard
chose the file on the machine and let's go
First Challenge which faced me is how to change the scale of my sketch without deforming it Eng/ Menna Elbadry helped me with this problem she told me that there is a tool called Sketch Scale as you in the photo
The idea of its work is that you click on it, then select the entire shape, then choose the point of origin in the second option, and drag from any angle you want
The second challenge was in the front ring, which represents the shape of the moon
I wanted to draw some aesthetic shapes, but also after drawing and defining them, they do not appear with me in the LaserWorks program, as is the case in the feathers of the eagle's neck in the glasses
I asked my colleague, Mayar Wael, to help me, and she drew the shapes for me on the CAD program, then I sent him the file. I entered it on the LaserWorks program and put the shapes in place as well. I wanted
The shapefile will be below
The Coolest thing that we have learned this week is how to use resin with wood and make this wonderful things
thank for eng/ menna el badry for this nice extra session
