our assignment this week was to choose a3D model to print from websites like thingiverse and a dxf file to cut using the laser cutter
for the 3D print i chose a sitting cat from thingiverse:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3086045
and for the laser cut i chose a circular drawing of a cat on the moon from 3axis :
the softwares used to interpret the designs to the machines were ultimaker cura and rdwoks
ultimaker cura
RDWorks
PRUSA i3 mk 3D printer
MALKY ml1390 laser cutter
adobe illustrator was used for additional editing on the dxf drawing
pla filament
ply wood
for the 3D cat print i imported it on cura and descaled it to 40% of its original size in order to minimize the material usage
i chose the layer to be 0.2, set the infill to 10%, then added supports and adhesion to stabilize the print.
at first the temperature was set to 215 for extrusion and 60 degrees for the build plate , but had to be increased to 220 for extrusion and 70 for build plate
as for the laser cut drawing , i edited it in adobe illustrator to turn it into a pendant rather than its initial design , which was a night lamp
initial design
editing on AI
final design
the cut lines were set to 10 speed and 60 power
first scan was 10 speed and 20 power
second scan was 350 speed and power for darker areas
third scan was 100 speed and 20 power
for the 3d print transferred the gcode to the memory card of the printer.
then i started the printer and chose my gcode file to print
i waited for the first few layers to set and left the printer to finish.
Title of Media
as for the laser cutter i exported the udisk file to the machines flash drive and started the machine , copied the file to the memory ,set the origin point of the print and adjusted the focus of the laser , then tracked were the print will work calculated the time and started the print
i wanted to change the color of the filament for my print and mai taught me how to do it .
and i had challenges with stabilizing the print as it failed three time before the final print .
i gave the methods i learned to overcome the challenges to my colleges who came after me to ensure for them a stabilized print.
the 3d print failed three times before .
first failure was because of the temp. of the build plate as it was cold so i raised it from 60 to 70 degrees
second failure was because of the extrusion temp. as the layers weren't sticking properly , so i raised the temp. from 215 to 220
third failure was because the print required additional adhesion, so i increased the brim
i could use my the skills i used this week to a better understanding of how to use the abilities of the machines and implement them in my designs of the final project
the coolest thing i learned was how to change the filament for the printer , mai taught me how and it was easy to do
