Welcome 😊
This week we had to design and fabricate a mobile phone holder
I like multi purpose things. As I was browsing through Google images looking for inspiration for my assignment for the week I stumbled upon this photo. Pingo I find what was looking for! I fired up Fusion and I start designing right away.
Autodesk Fusion 360
LaserWork
Both software were used to design and prepare my model for fabrication.
Morn MT3050D CO2 Laser Cutter
Material used: Plywood 3 mm
The laser cutter used to fabricate my model.
M3 screws and nuts were used to assemble the part together.
First, I didn't made any cardboard prototypes for this design. I just used the cardboard mobile holder that I made during this week's "Hands-on, Minds-on" for some measurement as a reference for me. Then I just jumped into designing using Autodesk Fusion 360
I start by sketching starting by the bottom part which I kept editing it all through my journey of designing this model due to some miscalculation🤦🏻♂️then I sketch the side part with place for tabs and hinge of the top side then I sketch the front side with "U" opening in the middle so I can use the holder while the mobile is connected with charging cable then I sketched the back and the top. One of the best tools I used while sketching was the Mirror as most of my sketches were symmetric. And also While I was sketching I made sure that every sketch is fully defined using some constraints like horizontal/vertical, coincident, perpendicular & etc.
After I finished all the sketches I start extruding my sketches into 3mm parts to match the thickness of the plywood that I'm gone use during fabrication
I joined all the parts together to make sure that all the part would fit together without problem or misalignment.
Then after I Made sure that all the parts fit together I export all sketches as DXF
Sketches
Assembling
Second, I used LaserWork to prepare my design to be cut using laser cutter. I imported the DXF files into LaserWork and nested all the part next to each other minimizing the spaces between them.
My Laser cutting Parameters:
Cutting Speed: 15 mm/s
Cutting Power 70%
I went to the Fab Lab to cut my design using the Laser Cutter.
In the Maker Space I did the following:
I Power up the laser cutter
I copied the *.rld file on flash drive and connect it to the laser cutter computer
I placed plywood & secure it with tape just to make sure it will stay in place.
I checked the laser focus and adjusted to perfection.
Using the laser cutter controls I redefined the origin point that the laser would start from.
I download the *.rld file to the laser cutter machine.
Using the laser cutter controls I navigate to my file and trace the model frame and run it.
After all the pieces were cut I remove it and assemble it using 6 x M3 screws and nuts

Ibrahim showed me how to export f3d file from Autodesk Fusion 360 and how to upload in back so me and my team could share sketches during "EoWeek Session Exercise".
I brain stormed with Rawan to imagine how could her design be implemented and still meet the assignment requirement.
I asked for feedback on my design from Amani & Ibrahim and they like the design.
I asked Amani about the minimum space between tabs and edge of the design and she recommended at least 3mm.
During the Implementation phase after the laser cutter finish it's run some pieces were not fully cut throw so Amani helped me and suggested to remove only the fully cut pieces and change it's color in LaserWork and turn off the laser out-put over these pieces and re-run laser again but only over the not fully cut pieces
Also me and colleagues, we all like to talk and sharing knowledge & ideas.
❤️
While using Autodesk Fusion 360 make sure to take measurement of everything because sometime after you done with sketching you will find some misalignment in the parts when you try to put them together.
Also it's nice way to use offset of your shape as constriction line so when ever you need to modify any tabs later it will be easier and I had learn it the hard way because when I need to adjust my distance between the tabs and edge and had to modify each tab separately so I delete all of them and used offset line this time to help me.
The skills & knowledge I have acquired this week would help me fabricating enclosure for my project.
Autodesk Fusion 360 not hard as I was imagine 🤔.
And the ability to turn any idea into real design that could be later fabricated is fascinating makes you feel like you have a super power 🦸🏻♂️.
