The idea for this week is to practice using the laser cutter and 3D Printer. It was very tough trying to choose from thousands of beautiful designs a single model to print and cut, specifically a simple model that met the criteria for the assignment.
for 3D, I chose a phone stand / Key-chain that looks like a little kitten, which I think is a smart design and very small form. it also is easy to print and doesn't need support. I choose it because it'll be nice to have a phone holder on me at all times.
For 2D model I chose another key-chain, this time it's of a dragon from the movie series "how to train your dragon", I plan on finishing it with colors once I cut it. I choose this model because my wife had a similar key-chain that broke recently. I thought this would be a nice little surprise :) .
Software:
Cura 3d.
Laser works.
Adobe illustrator (to fix a file).
Cloudconvert (to convert from .cdr to .dxf).
Machines:
Lase cutting machine.
Prusa Mk3 3D printer.
Materials :
esun PLA+ Filament.
3mm Plywood.
Laser cutting
Old Design - But after I rounded some corners.
Edited Design - attached Below.
It's a simple key chain, I edited the design to move the hole to a different location where it doesn't interfere with the design and hope it offers better rigidity .
I also used illustrator to round some sharp corners from the original design. I decided I want to keep the original tone of the wood, So I won't be using any Scan orders.
The dimensions are: 64*67 mm and it'll take less than a minute to cut.
The settings are:
Black: Cut - 300 mm/s - 50% Power.
Red: Cut - 15 mm/s - 70% Power.
3d kitten phone stand - attached below
since it's a small sized model I opted for higher quality print . at .1 mm profile resolution . the model is 30.8*46.1*26.3 mm which means at this resolution it'll still only use 5 gm of PLA+ Filament and it'll only take 1 hour and 4 minutes to print. which is well within the time margin .
I'm using 20% infill with triangular pattern.
I hope it goes smoothly isA.
Laser Cut Assignment:
Using the laser work software I sent the design to the cutter memory using the (download) command.
on the cutter I navigated to the file, used frame to make sure it'll fit on the wooden sheet nicely. and started the operation.
It took around a minute to finish the design.

3D Printing Assignment:
due to time constrain I had to change the resloution to .3 mm to get faster printing time . the print turned out great.
Used sd card reader to copy the .gcode file to the printer, selected it and gave the print order.
it took around 3 minutes to heat the bed and nozzle and the print went smooth from there on.
T-rex model with the new support
Our first print of the T-rex failed halfway due to printer error. Omar the fablab specialist instructed us to change the support settings from (Everywhere) to (Touching Buildplate) which was very helpful and worked perfectly on the second try.
Laser-cutting challenges :
The power for the engrave was set a bit higher than it should be, which resulted in losing the fine and tiny details . I'd do it again with lower power settings than mentioned above.
Edge burn
Prusa 3D Printer
Getting familiar with the machines was very informative, since I'll be Fabricating my Final project using these machines.
It was fun getting to deal with the Prusa since I've only worked with Utimakers before. it's very easy to use :) .
The coolest thing I stumbled upon while tinkering with Cura software was Gyroid inFill . It looks so interesting, and I wish I can try it one day with some translucent filament . read more about it here.
Gyroid infill
Really enjoyed getting back to work with the laser cutting machine.
The task was simple and the result is nice.
IT’S-A ME, MARIO!
