Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What were you inspired by?
Making a simple prototype for a phone holder using fusion 360 software.
I cared about this assignment cause it was my first time to design and assemble a simple model on my own.
I was inspired by my own phone holder in home plus adding a feature for changing the phone's position from vertical to horizontal according to the user.
my own phone holder
using wood appearance
applying the joints for the assembly
Tool Chain
Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?
Fusion 360 to design the parts and assemble them.
Laser works for the design process.
Laser cutting machine to cut the parts.
Plywood sheet 3mm thickness.
Plywood sheets
Laser cutting machine "malky"
Design/Preparation Process
Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?
initial sketching
I started with a simple manual sketch to get an idea of the model trying to understand the concept and make a better user experience by applying the vertical and horizontal position for the phone.
Then by adding a simple pattern of intersected triangles on the side view to spice it up.
I tried to get the dimensions from my own mobile phone then I inserted them to fusion 360 and made 2.5D parts.
By applying the extrude and the joints and giving it a wooden appearance to check that everything looks alright then exporting the dxf files to get them to the lasercad software.
1- Drawing the base
2- Drawing the back "with t-slot and tabs"
3- Drawing the sides with curves suitable for the phone thickness
4- Extrusion for all parts "3mm".
5- Applying joints.
6- Giving the model a wooden texture from physical appearance option.
7- Being able to change position for the phone from vertical to horizontal.
Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?
1- Preparing the laser cutting machine : remove any leftovers from a previous slot, prepare the plywood sheet 3mm thickness, start the machine, connect it to the laptop using the cable then sending the file from laser works to the machine and naming it. Set the origin point and the box "place required for the cutting" then click start.
2- The following parameters were chosen:
cutting mode
Power :70 Speed :30
engraving mode:
Power :40Speed :300

Overcoming Challenges
What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)
1- Making a pattern on a profile for the side view was difficult to apply during the extrusion process so I was able to make it in the laser cad software at least.
2- The phone holder wasn't fixed enough so it would've been better to add more tabs.
Final Project
How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?
T- slot
Getting used to the laser cutting machine would help me design the house model and the vertical components in the shading devices in the facades.
While the 3d printing process could help in making any curvature required in the façade design.
WOW!
What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?
Getting familiar with the 3d modeling software to get the wanted prototype.
Understanding the concept of the T-slot and tabs to connect the parts of a model instead of press fits and using glue that might ruin the final product eventually.
