I was looking for a pen holder design that will be 3D printed with PLA filament, when Doaa showed me this design because she knew how much genetics inspired me. I chose to start with this design by watching videos and thinking about what features I could use and how to make it meet the desired criteria.
I used Fusion 360 to draw the design and Ultimaker cura for 3d printing.
It was my first time using Fusion 360 to create a 3d design, and I created a variety of models such as fidget and lego. We learned how to assemble 3d elements and how to animate them, as well as features such as revolve, extrude, loft, sweap, and shell.
using cura software to prepare the design for the 3d printing machine , after exported the file as stl from fusion 360 I uploaded the file to cura and adjust dimensions, supports then adjust parameters .02 and infill 20% then sclicing to estimate the time and weight it takes 8 grams and 53 mins.
Fusion 360
1- draw circle R30
2-Extrude 25mm
3-series of circles (16-20R) and extrude 3mm
4-polygon 60mm and central line in it after the draw 2 lines in the top and bottom of the polygon
5-trim unnecessary parts
7- revolve the shape
8-drawing 16 mm circle in the bottom of the polygon then extrude cut 3mm
9- shell the top of the polygon
10- assembly the 2 parts
11- choose the design, right clik, apperance , choose the color
12- save as stl
ultemaker cura
1- adjust dimensions
2-adjust parameters profile default 0.2, infill 30%
3- check supports and it doesn't need supports
4- slicing it, 8 gms and 53 minutes
3d printing machine
choose the filament color
2- uploded the sd card with g code to the machine
3- preheat the bed and nozel and change the filament
4- start fabricating
First, I chose the design and looked for similar designs on Thingeverse so that I could see it from different perspectives and decide what features I wanted to use. At first, I planned to draw the design using extrude and sweep, but after I finished, I didn't like it, so I switched to revolve instead of sweep.
Doaa suggested this design ,and I was asking about how to save as stl and they told me I can exported it as stl or save as mesh and choose stl , also I shared the design on slack to ask about feed back they give me some advice to help in drawing the body
I was confused about how to save as stl as I was changed the bodies to component and I asked on slack the help me with 2 methods I can use to save the file as stl first one was to choose export from file and then choose export as stl the second was to press right click on body and choose save as mesh then change to stl
