Neither want nor reject, Not an option!
Design thinking was a little confusing term, I first heard of it this week.
But I liked the idea, It's like you can organize how you think and how you can plan to meet your customers' requirements and reach what they want deeply inside!
like a psychologist...
The product here will be the smart mirror (my individual project) and our job today is to know the exact features we have to use in our product to make the customers happy!
the targeted user will be a home member that means every human can use it (and some animals maybe XD)
I made interviews with my family as We live in the same home.
That means we have 4 members to contact with (5 if I counted myself).
I made 10 min interview with each person ( including myself )
I needed to know how my product can be useful for them.
The main idea of the project was a decor mirror that is smart enough to communicate with people and show needed output.
The interview started with a quick already similar projects done before and a quick explanation of the capabilities of It in order to explain how smart mirror works!
Then I asked them about what they need the most in their daily life that can be shown in public and those were their answers:
Father : He needs to check
the time and date and the weather of each day,
also he wanted azan of each prayer times and the important news of the day,
the schedule of his day like work times, appointments, sports and medicine,
and to play some quran as a mp3 player.
Mother : she needed nearly the same things as my father
Sister number 1 : she was thrilled by the idea but did not add anything new, she listened to my parents interview so maybe that limited her ideas
Sister number 2 : she added Two ideas, First one was to connect it to security camera system and alarm system, the second was to control by touch
Myself : I wanted to check time and easy control of music, setting alarms, and speed test of the internet to monitor the stability of the internet
Defining each need of the family:
Need: Time, Date, schedule, alarms, Weather. Because: Keeping their day and month controlled and to check what to wear
Need: azan, important news. Because: religious family and to keep an eye on country's statues
Need: Quran or music. because: chilling out Insight: May be that increase how cool the project is
Need: Easy control. because: It is a need that explains itself
Need: internet check. because: Internet is not stable and we occasionally need to check the router so that will be easier
Need: Security system view. because: keep the thieves out. Insight: We do not have an existing system
Taking the ideas to the next level, taking into concern the ability to satisfy those needs and the importance to the user
Touch control was too expensive to implement, the internet test was not mandatory
Security system requires lots of money and preparations
Mp3 player requires a tiring setup, an easy flash accessible port and voice, touch or gesture control, also everyone has their phone and handsfree
The prototype of my project was made as a simple test of the software at the main living room screen, leaving it working for about 3 days, playing azan perfectly, showing time, date, some news, weather, and a random schedule
My family liked the idea too much
The full system was in Arabic so that was quite handy.
although it is not quite the same as the intended final product but for now, that delivers the idea.
All went well till the electricity blackout came and that ruined the mood (added autostart later)
What I learned this week is...
I liked the idea of Design thinking and I will surely try to search more about it as it focuses on users' needs. in that way, we can apply the quality management perspectives and increase the capability of the product that makes our users even happier.
