Course Description:
World Music is an elective that, using the World Music Drumming curriculum designed by Will Schmid, gives students some hands on experience with folk music from Africa and Latin America . Students will primarily play percussion and sing the songs to experience music from these cultures, and may also be asked to move and/or dance. In addition, students may receive instruction on percussion instruments. During the second half of the course students will research and present on the music from another culture and may participate in activities to learn about specific musical genres.
Grading:
Grading is a point system: all assignments will be given a point value and they will be added together to come up with the final grade.
Students should expect to be graded independently on their skills and in large groups as they perform the ensembles from the method book.
This is a class that requires active participation and students are expected to participate to the best of their ability at all times. Students need to be part of the process in order to be part of the ensemble performance.
What do you need for class?
positive attitude and willingness to try
laptop and charger
pencil
headphones may be useful, but are not necessary
Grades are traditionally updated every Wednesday. While they may be updated more frequently, they will be updated on Wednesday for eligibility.
Phones
Phones are not to be used in class. Students will be asked to keep them in their backpack and will be given a paper bag, if needed, to put their phone in for the duration of class. This keeps it in their possession, but hopefully removes the temptation. Students may receive a disciplinary referral if their phone is a major distraction. If a student is on their phone, they are not parcitipating in class.
Absences:
Students who miss class will need to ask what they have missed and need to make up. If "abs" appears next to a grade, it must be made up and the "abs" will be replaced by a grade one week after it is posted. If a student is absent and excused from an assignment, it will be marked "ex" on the portal.
