About the class:
In this class you will be continuing to study your band instrument. This class will be largely self-paced, but is geared for the instrumentalist who has experience playing and reading music. Students will be given individual goals based on their level of experience. This class is not intended to replace private lessons and students should not expect the same kind of attention in this class that they would receive in a private studio. Students must be enrolled in the concert band and must remain in good standing in band.
Materials:
In class you will continue to study your instrument using materials available on the software SmartMusic. This may include instrument specific literature and band literature. Depending on the class membership, students may have the opportunity to work in duets, or other small groups as part of their study. Grading will be based on progress through your method book.
Students may bring in books and literature that have been assigned by a teacher outside of school. Students studying privately are encouraged to bring in materials issued by their private teacher and to use class time to work on it. If the music you are working on with your private instructor is not available in SmartMusic, email Ms. Reinecke as accommodations may need to be made.
What do you need?
Students will need to bring their instrument, and computer and charger, and any additional music they wish to have.
Grading:
Students will use the software SmartMusic to track their practice time. Students are expected to track (interact with the software by recording/playing) for 45 minutes for each class period and your weekly grade will be posted as a percentage of the time you have completed practicing. Additionally, students should expect to submit a recordings a couple times each quarter, through this software or Google Classroom, to show their mastery. These recordings will need to be accompanied by a paragraph explaining what you have been working on, achieving, and why you chose it. Students may also be asked to perform pieces at the request of the teacher.
Each day of school, practice time will be worth 20 points, and will be reported weekly on Wednesdays.
45 points daily for 5 days is 225 minutes
Ex: A student who posts 200 practice minutes will receive 200/225, or 89% (89 points) for the week.
Practice time cannot be earned after the week is over
Students may earn practice time over the weekend and it is looked at as a week total, not a daily total
Each recorded mastery performance and accompanying paragraph will be worth 100 points. Students should plan for these to occur at mid-quarter and the end of the quarter.
Absences:
Alternate or adjusted grading may be utilized if you are absent for an extended amount of time.
Practice Rooms
The advanced instrumental class meets at the same time as piano class. Instrumental students will work in the practice rooms outside the piano room.
Instrument Care
Students are expected to take good care of their instrument as they need it for use in class. Should your instrument not be playing as it should, let Ms. Reinecke know immediately. Should you need a loaner instrument, you should contact her as soon as you know you will need it.
Clarinet and saxophone players will find reeds in the band room and should always have 3 good ones in their case. There is also a limited supply of cork grease and valve oil there as well.
