Since the start of the year, our ESL class has been working on a unit about the tragic day of September 11, 2001. When this day occurred, 12 years ago, my students were only one or two years old, so they did not have a memory of this event. In class we read newspaper articles and poems about 911, watched videos, made flags, wrote essays, and had a wonderful guest speaker. We invited Officer Tim Brooks to share his experiences as a Bethlehem Police Officer, his work in Afghanistan, and his work with his police horse.
Here are some pictures and quotes from my students about our guest speaker. It was a great experience for him to visit!!!
"We LOVED how you came in and talked and showed us your collections from Afghanistan. It was very interesting when you showed us your MRE food (Meal Ready to Eat) and your hat, the pakol."
"The parts we loved the most were the pictures of the horses. We loved the video that you showed us! We also enjoyed the way you explained the process on how the horses are being trained. We thought that was very neat!"
"We also liked the horse harness!"
"We thought it was interesting that you helped local residents build schools in Afghanistan, and that you gave some treasures to a Korean soldier."
"One last thing that we liked is the way you explained the details about the 911 tapestry that has traveled around the world."
"Thank you Officer Brooks! You gave us phenomenal information about 9/11. That visit was great, we just want to thank you one more time because that was a very nice thing for you to do."
