I took a class entitled Community Immersion. Through that class, I had the opportunity to meet with and learn from professionals from across the community in the for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors. This page includes my learning and reflections on some of the presenters I found most significant.
I had the opportunity to meet with David McCoy with Freightliner in Cleveland, NC. David McCoy invited my class to visit Freightliner. I got to see the assembly line and the assembly process for their trucks. While we were there, the assembly line was off because they ran out of rear truck axels. It was important to see how much it takes to create a truck and how important having all the right pieces is to getting the job done.
Freightliner is an example of example of a system because each step has to connect to the other in a way that starts from the base to the final pieces. The thousands of separate pieces, when put together in the right order, make the final product.
I met Sheriff Alan when he presented to us about his line of work. Mr. Alan explained how they patrol different zonings and what they do to protect the citizens in the area they patrol. He had mentioned a recent bust at the flea market and explained what they do with the confiscated goods.
This shows how the county government help enforce the laws and what the limitations of some of the devices they use are.
I met the Planning and Zoning Administrator Steve Blount of Spencer when he presented to us about Zoning in Spencer. I learned why houses are zoned with businesses and industries. Its important to me because it was a question I had for while and decided to ask it, so now I know.
This shows how residents contribute to the planning of zoning in the community. This is because citizens need places to shop and work, which therefor increases traffic in residential and commercial areas which may cause the roads to be widened do to heavy traffic. I now undestand zoning plays an important role in our community by providing order and structure in our daily lives.
