I took a class entitled Community Immersion. Through that class, I had the opportunity to meet with and learn from professionals from across the community in the for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors. This page includes my learning and reflections on some of the presenters I found most significant.
Brad Walser is the CEO of Walser Technology. We went to see Brad at his place of work because he had some key things he wanted us to do there. Meeting with him was very educational. We talked about cybersecurity and all the ways people scam and hack into your network. Brad spoke about ways to prevent these people from getting into your network by not accepting strange emails, clicking on wired links, joining strange phone calls, etc. At the end of the lesson, we got to break down the components of a computer that were already going to be recycled so we could not hurt them. We needed to learn these things now since the world as of this time is heading to an online state so it was very important to be able to learn how to protect ourselves and our privacy from the bad people in the world.
What we learned at Walser Technology connects to systems because there whole organization is one big system that works together to get things done. Starting from the customer calling, going through the helpline, going to the technician, going to the accountant, and finally getting to the boss. It works like a chain and that's how they get their work done so if something were to disrupt the chain it would be assumed that there would be an issue with their services.
We met with Rowan County Sheriff Allan, who explained his role in the County Government. He manages the jail, oversees deputies, and makes key decisions for the department. He’s elected by the public and chooses his own staff. Funding comes from the county budget and grants, which help cover things like equipment and salaries. It was very interesting to hear how much goes into running the sheriff’s office and how it connects to are County Government.
In the town of Spencer, we learned about the work of the Police and firefighters. We met Joel Taylor, Chief Michael File, Lieutenant Tim Everett, and Chief Michael Lanning. These individuals taught us all about the Spencer government and how it works as a system. They show how each of them put their part into the Spencer community and made it all work together. In working with them, we learned how to use the tools of the firefighter like hoes, door wedges, and the escuvelier. The most enjoyable part was at the police station where they let us shoot a taser at a target, and learning how to use it was very noteworthy, and I am thankful for letting us do that. This experience was very insightful in being able to get a look at a local law enforcement and rescue squad that focuses on and risks their lives to keep us safe.
