Through my Art Immersion class, I developed multiple forms of creative expression as I learned alongside an array of professionals in the community. This page shows how I developed new, artistic ideas as well as interpreted, presented, and shared artistic work. This page also illustrates my understanding of how the arts convey meaning and my ability to connect artistic work with personal meaning and external context.

Costume Design
I went to the Meroney Theater and learned from Bradley Moore, Executive Director of Piedmonth Players. I learned about the importance of costume design in theater and how they are made. Costume designers do lots of research for costumes and have to think about the stage and setting as they design costumes. I read a script and designed a costume for a character of my choosing.

Storytelling
I learned the most about storytelling through Brad Stephenson, an educator and theater artist. He taught me how to immerse readers into a story using only your voice and body. There are three elements of a performance: the teller, the audience, and the story itself. When all three of these elements come together, it results in something called “enchantment.” Using his teachings, I created my own story and turned it into a podcast.

Percussion
Kim Lentz, the handbell director at St. Johns Lutheran Church, taught me how to play handbells and eventually play some pieces. I learned how to count beats and read music. I was taught different ways to use a bell that wasn't ringing.
I also had the chance to work with the first graders at the Salisbury Academy lower school to create music to accompany a fairytale. I had to create my score and cues that the first graders could play along with. I chose which instruments would work the best with my story.

Lifelong Skills
Through my costume design experience, I demonstrated being a motivated student. I was very eager to design the costume and researched to prepare myself to create the costume. (Motivated Student)
In my storytelling experience, I showed myself as a creative problem solver. I had many troubles with the programs I used to create my podcast, and had to find a way to fix them. I also had to learn how to add more emotion to my story using only my voice and extra sounds. (Creative Problem Solver)
During my percussion experience, I demonstrated being a confident communicator. I had to work with my classmates during handbells to play music properly and communicate with the first graders so they knew their cues during the fairytale. (Confident Communicator)
