Congratulations Carmen P.!

Carmen was selected as one of the winners in this year's Kappy Family Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel Night Art & Writing Competition through the Holocaust Memorial Center.

Millions and millions of people were killed in the Holocaust, but we only know a fraction of their stories. They were not dissimilar to you and me. They had friends and family. They went to school and had jobs. They loved, laughed, argued, and cried. All of that was taken away from them. It's impossible to know every one of their millions of stories and the unimaginable pain that they went through. But we must try to remember what we can, even if it's just a single detail of their life.

My piece illustrates the millions of people whose lives were taken away in the Holocaust. The single face is made of different pieces. The different colors represent the different kinds of victims. The papers and textures represent the different stories that we don't know or just barely know. The singed edges represent the loss of life.

The bigger hand is passing the face down to the younger hand because older generations must pass down the memory of the Holocaust to younger generations. Younger generations need to know to prevent the tragedy of the Holocaust from ever happening again. They must remember their pain.
