Support Providers are assigned to all emergency-credentialed and internship pathway teachers in accordance with the requirements set forth by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). These support providers must meet these minimum requirements:
Clear-credentialed teacher in good standing, meaning they are recognized by their school's administration as an exemplary teacher.
At least 3 years classroom experience in the subject area they will be providing support.
Ability, willingness, and flexibility to meet a participating teacher’s needs for support.
Demonstrates commitment to professional learning and collaboration.
Support providers receive a stipend amount that varies from district to district to compensate for the 2-4 minimum hours a week the support provider works with the new teacher throughout the course of the school year. Many of these S.Ps. become induction coaches for the same teachers once these new teachers earn their preliminary credential.
Peer observation is a proven strategy to help new teachers see, hear and listen to quality teaching conducted by a trusted peer either in their similar content area of study or perhaps demonstrating a valuable strategy.
Some school districts have allotted monies to pay for sub coverage while the new teacher observes their colleague. One school site allots 2 full-days, or 12 hours for the new teacher to observe while 1 full day, or 6 hours are allotted for the mentor teacher to observe their mentee. Educator Effectiveness Funds would be an excellent source of funding for peer teacher observation.
