About the Graphite Medium
Graphite comes in different hardnesses. Smaller number pencils (2B) are made of hard graphite and will produce light values. Higher number pencils (9B) are made of softer graphite and produce darker values. In class we are using a 2B (light) pencil and an Ebony (dark) pencil . We are also using a white elastic eraser because it won't rip or leaves marks on the paper.

- value - the amount of light reflected from the surface. A light value is a tint. A dark value is a shade.
- shading - the act of creating value on a paper with a medium.
- contour line - the imaginary line that creates the perimeter of an object.
- gradient - a soft gradual transition from one value to the next.

I found this video on YouTube and I love it because it shows how pencils are made. I had no idea that it was such an involved process. I really liked learning how the pencil itself was shaped.

Melissa Cooke is a graphite artists that I am inspired by. She uses powder graphite and paints realistic images on large platform paper. I enjoyed listening to her passion for what she is making and I am in awe of how realistic her work is.

This is a time lapse video by Tessa Tekent. Her style is realistic. Her drawing looks photorealistic. I enjoyed watching her draw this drawing because she makes it look so easy. I like watching how she builds up layers. She starts light and slowly goes darker. The shadows around the light strands of hair make the hair look very real.

This is a video by artist and instructor Sadie Valeri Atelier. I am amazed at the high level of realism she is achieving using H shading pencils. I like listening to her talk because she is using art vocabulary that I don't hear often. In watching this video I have learned that I need to slow down and take my time. She is shading in circular motions to layer in graphite, which is achieving a smooth soft gradient. I would like to try drawing from a cast model like she is someday.
