The Alisal High Folklórico Dance program is dedicated to the preservation of Mexican Culture, and to foster better understanding among the AHS student body by learning, teaching, and promoting traditional Mexican music and dances.
The Folklorico dance program at Alisal High School is a distinctive and robust initiative. It began in 1994 when the first Folklorico dance class was introduced as a “pilot course.” Due to its popularity, the school board approved a comprehensive curriculum, and the Folklorico class became a permanent part of Alisal's regular schedule. Today, these classes are A-G UC approved.
The Alisal Folklorico dance program is a dynamic and evolving program that has experienced significant growth within our district. Our primary goal is to promote culture through dance among our students and the community. In addition to focusing on movement, our curriculum emphasizes dance theory and history. It is common for our classes to perform both within and beyond our community. Currently the program has been intergrading different dance styles to support Mexican Folklorico. The focus is for studetns to build a foundation to support them in any and all dance forms.
The beginning baile folklorico course is designed to introduce students to movement. In this class students learn about basic sequences, choreography and theater management to support in department shows.
The intermediate baile folklorico course encourages students to step out of their comfort zone. Students learn about performance etiquette and put it to practice in performances throughout the community.
Students are required to research a state in Mexico and make a presentation that gives general information on that state. The second part of the project requires studetns to build a website with the information they gathered.
Students receive dance anatomy lectures to give them insight on how the body works. After the lectures, student's compose a warm up exercise highlighting different muscles that their warm up will target. Students will present these warm ups to the class.
Students put together a portfolio where they document projects, performances and work they have done throughout the year in class. This project is turned in as a final project at the end of the year.
Our program is a proud supporter of community events. Student's show the material they have learned outside of class in performances. Student's get to take a step further by wearing traditional clothing form the states and regions they are learning.
Aside from preforming out in the community, our program also provides performances to our local elementary schools, middle schools and other high schools.
