From the start of the school year through March 15, 2022, the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act (EPSLA) entitled employees to be compensated for absences resulting from a Covid-related reason (e.g., diagnosis, quarantine order, vaccination, etc.) for the employee or a family member. EPSLA allowed employees to be compensated during these absences without using their own accrued sick time. EPSLA limited compensation to the hours/days an employee worked in a typical week, up to a maximum of $850 or 5 days of pay (whichever limit was reached first).
Under a recently signed MOA, all STU members can now be compensated for up to 5 days of Covid Sick Time. If an employee already was compensated for a Covid-related absence through the EPSLA, those EPSLA days are deducted from the MOA’s newly created 5 Covid Sick Days.
Below are some scenarios which show how the MOA’s new Covid Sick relates to the EPSLA. (Note: employees can view their own absence history in Frontline to see whether they have already accessed the EPSLA.)
What if I never accessed the EPSLA?
You are entitled to up to 5 Covid Sick Days.
If you previously missed school for a Covid-related reason, or need to do so in the future, you should complete this Google Form.
What if I accessed the EPSLA, reached the $850 limit, and then had to use my accrued sick time in order to be paid?
You are entitled to have your sick time accruals adjusted.
Here is an example. Suppose you make $425 per day. You were absent from work for 5 days because of being diagnosed with Covid. Through the EPSLA, you were compensated for 2 absence days (the $850 limit). Those 2 days were not taken from your accrued sick time. However, you needed to use your accrued sick time to be compensated for the 3 remaining days. Under the MOA, these 3 days would be returned to your accrued sick time.
If this situation applies to you, you do not need to take any action.
The Payroll team will adjust your sick time accruals in Frontline.
You will be notified when your accruals are adjusted.
Adjustments and notification will happen on or before Friday, May 13, 2022.
What if I already missed 5 days of school due to a Covid-related absences and was compensated for all 5 days through the EPSLA?
You have already used the 5 Covid Sick Days provided through the MOA.
