Spinal Screening Dec. 11th
San Angelo ISD addresses state mandated screening procedures by conducting screens for vision, hearing, spinal (scoliosis and kyphosis) and Acanthosis Nigricans (AN).
Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) serves as an indicator of risk for Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. All students in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades are screened for acanthosis nigricans.
Any student referred by a teacher, principal, parent and physician.
Students referred by Special Education and 504
All students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades.
All students new to the state of Texas.
Lincoln AN, Vision and Hearing Screenings: October 22-23, 2025
If a child requires prescription eye-wear or hearing aids, be sure they have these prior to screening dates.
Our school will conduct spinal screenings on Thursday, December 11th, 2025. Texas State law requires schools to screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:
Girls will be screened two times, at age 10 and 12 (or fall semester of 5th grade and fall semester of 7th grade)
Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (or fall semester of 8th grade)
Athletes with current sports physicals will not be screened
Trained screeners will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. Screeners will look at your child’s back while he or she stands and bends forward.
*It is recommended that students remove their shirt or blouse for better visualization of the spine.
Important recommendations:
Girls should wear a sports bra or two-piece swimsuit top underneath their clothing on exam day.
Boys will be asked to remove their shirts for the screening.
Both boys and girls may choose to wear a thin tank top underneath their clothing; however, visualization will not be as good.
Screening for boys and girls are done separately. Girls will be screened by a female nurse
The school will send you a letter if your child does not pass the screening. The letter will have more information for you and your child’s medical provider. Please keep in mind that this screening is not a medical exam. Signs of scoliosis can progress at different rates during adolescence, and could be missed during screening, for this reason we encourage you to take your student to their medical provider for an annual check-up, even if you do not receive a letter.
Parents may decline Health Screenings for their children. If a parent selected "NO" on the SB12 consent form, their children will be automatically excluded from Health Screenings. If a parent selected "YES" on the SB12 consent form, children can still be excluded from Health Screenings, by printing and signing the "Health Screenings Declination" form posted below. Please submit form directly to the School Nurse.
If your child is actively under medical care for a spinal diagnosis you must provide a note from your child’s physician that states your child is actively under medical care for a spinal diagnosis. The document must be dated and signed.
