Welcome to Second Grade in Room 20 at St. Pius Catholic School
As a member of the St. Pius Catholic School Community, I will strive to follow the mission of Jesus as I study, pray, and serve.
Second Grade Overview
Second grade is a year full of academic and spiritual growth. Time is spent developing the whole child as they work on further developing their academic skills in the areas of reading, writing, math, science, social studies, handwriting, and religion. Spiritual growth happens through many different learning experiences such as daily religion instruction, weekly mass, retreats as well as preparation and receiving both the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation.
The second grade curriculum includes instruction in Religion, Math, Reading, Phonics, English and Writing, Science, Social Studies, Spelling, and Handwriting. We also have weekly instruction in Music, Gym, Computers, Spanish, Art, and Media.
We use Orton Gillham as the basis for our phonics and spelling instruction and Making Meaning to develop comprehension skills. We also have a classroom structure that allows students to work independently on literacy activities while the teacher works with students individually or in small groups.
Math is taught as whole class instruction. During individual work time students who need more assistance can meet with the teacher in small group setting. Karate Math is used daily to develop addition and subtraction facts. Students are tested weekly on their facts at their individual level.
Our students learn through a variety of teaching methods such as whole group instruction, small learning groups, partner work, and individualized activities. Technology is integrated in our classroom through the use of Chromebooks, SmartBoard, and a document camera. We utilize our Science Lab twice a week for hands-on exploration and instruction.
I think St. Pius is a great place to be and would love the opportunity to talk to you further about our school ... and about our second grade in particular!
